James Bond, Rose Tyler & Dracula: Is Penny Dreadful the next geek hit?
If you're a fan of cult television and you're not excited about Penny Dreadful, the Week in Geek recommends that you read this week's blog and *then* see how you feel...

First announced in January 2013, Penny Dreadful is a new Showtime series from the men behind Skyfall - director Sam Mendes and writer John Logan - and it basically sounds like TV manna from geek heaven. Here's six reasons why we can't wait to see it...

The premise of Penny Dreadful is that a troupe of horror icons - including Dr Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and characters from Dracula - all exist in the same fictional universe and cross paths in Victorian London.

Alright, so the last time someone attempted a monster-mash of this magnitude, we ended up with Hugh Jackman's 2004 cinematic turd, but Mendes and Logan - riding high from their success with 007 and collaborating for the first time on television - should bring a little class to proceedings.

Penny Dreadful's James Bond quotient doesn't end with Mendes and Logan either - fourth 007 Timothy Dalton has been cast as Sir Malcolm, an African explorer. Dalton further ups this show's geek cred - not only was he Bond, but he also hung with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright on the set of Hot Fuzz, kicked ass and sported a fine moustache in 1980's Flash Gordon and played Rassilon, a legendary Time Lord, in Doctor Who.

And speaking of Doctor Who... making her US television debut proper - and her return to Showtime, where ITV series Secret Diary of a Call Girl aired Stateside - Billie Piper has signed up for a lead role in Penny Dreadful.

No word on who she's playing as yet, but enjoy Piper's return to Who in the 50th anniversary special, because - if this show takes off the way we're hoping it will - it could be the last time we see her on UK television for a while...

Remember Josh Hartnett? He used to be cool!

The likes of Pearl Harbor and some drab rom-coms may have done Josh Hartnett's once-promising career few favours, but the 35-year-old won over geeks once upon a time with strong early roles in the likes of Halloween H20 and The Faculty (both 1998)...

And he's been clawing his way back to cult credibility in recent years - see his terrific cameo in 2005's noir-fest Sin City or his lead part in 2007 vampire flick 30 Days of Night. Fingers crossed that Hartnett's role as suave Ethan Chandler in Penny Dreadful could complete the process.

Beyond Mendes, Logan and Dalton, Penny Dreadful's Bond factor is being upped further still with the addition of Rory Kinnear and Eva Green to the cast.

Green, lest we forget, has also filmed roles in the geeky likes of Camelot and the upcoming 300 sequel, and frolicked with Doctor Who star Matt Smith in sci-fi romance Clone - surely she's a cert to play a sexy vampire?

If you're concerned that Penny Dreadful sounds like a bit of a romp and could be lacking in decent scares, then this should help ease your worried mind - Juan Antonio Bayona is in the director's chair for the first two episodes.

Bayona recently achieved mainstream Hollywood success with Ewan McGregor / Naomi Watts sob-fest The Impossible but first grabbed our attention with his immensely creepy 2006 Spanish-language effort The Orphanage - expect chills aplenty from this guy!

Penny Dreadful (Showtime)

Showtime will add another dark show to their line-up in 2014. Penny  Dreadful will be a psychosexual horror series created by John Logan. The show will interconnect the origins of literary horror characters like Count Dracula, Dorian Gray, Victor Frankenstein and his monster as they all deal with their pasts and alienation from the populace in Victorian London.

Cast - Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton.

Abel Korzeniowski to Score Showtime’s ‘Penny Dreadful’

Abel Korzeniowski has been tapped to score the upcoming Showtime original series Penny Dreadful. The horror drama is created by John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator, The Aviator) and stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Billie Piper and Danny Sapani. The eight-episode series follows some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – as they become embroiled in Victorian London. Logan is also executive producing the series with Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, The Road to Perdition) and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Call the Midwife, The Hollow Crown). Juan Antonio Bayona (The Impossible, The Orphanage) has directed the first two episodes. Penny Dreadful is set to premiere later this year on Showtime. Korzeniowski who is best known for his Golden Globe-nominated scores for A Single Man and Madonna’s W.E. is coming off a year, which featured the release of his music for the indie Escape from Tomorrow and Carlo Carlei’s Romeo & Juliet.

Love/Hate lady of the night Janet thrilled with new horror role

Move over Nidge. Love/Hate's Madame and lady of the night Janet has a new man in her life.
Actress Mary Murray, who plays brothel owner Janet in RTE's drama, has nabbed a part in US drama Penny Dreadful and will be sharing the screen with Hollywood hunk Josh Hartnett.

But the Ballyfermot native is more excited about chatting with legendary director John Logan than hanging out with Hartnett.

"I'll be on set for two days so it's not a huge part but I'm delighted because I'll get to work with John Logan -- he's made some amazing movies like Hugo, Skyfall and Gladiator," she said.

"So just getting to see how he works will be amazing."

The horror series is set in Victorian England and sees a whole host of ghoulish literary figures such as Frankenstein's monster and Dorian Grey rendezvous.

Mary's role sounds pretty juicy.

"I play a Victorian lady. I can't say too much about the part but it involved a murder scene," she said.

"I can't wait to get on set and into the costume."

The 34-year-old actress has been working in theatre for the past several years but became a household name last year when she appeared as Nidge's 'bit on the side' in Love/Hate.

"Working on the show is fantastic. It's a very talented cast and crew and a great series to be part of."

But Mary says she has no idea what's going to happen in the next season.

"It's all very up in the air," she explained.

The actress took part in a rather risqué sex scene with Tom Vaughan-Lawlor in the last series and Mary says it was definitely the scene she got the most feedback about.

"People were having a laugh at one point. A few people said to my boyfriend, 'So what does it feel like knowing you're MOT is riding Nidge?'" she laughed. "We just joked about it."

Before Mary takes part in Penny Dreadful, she will star in Barnardos Under My Bed series at Smock Alley Theatre.

"It's going to be a fantastic night. I'm reading a poem by Orla Tinsley," she said.
