Danny Boyle leads Nicole Kidman and Josh Hartnett in all-star cast on London theatre stage

N all-star cast, including Nicole Kidman and Josh Hartnett, have been brought together by director Danny Boyle to give a unique charity performance.

James McAvoy, Cressida Bonas and Benedict Cumberbatch were among the A-list names who starred in the Children's Monologues at London's Royal Court Theatre on Sunday night.

Each actor performed first-hand accounts from children growing up in the remote South African town of Rammulotsi to raise money for Dramatic Need, an arts charity helping vulnerable children in Africa.

X-Men and Trainspotting star McAvoy said: "All the pieces are about bad things happening. It's Dramatic Need, not Dramatic Sunday Club. There is a need for it.

"It's all sad stuff but there are some funny bits along the way. It's problems such as misogny - bad treatment of women by men, girls by boys.

"Getting the chance to work with Danny, who I've worked with before, he's fully in control and in charge even though it's going to be a whirlwind and all over the place, he's the guy you want in charge of something like that."

David Thewlis, best known for his role as Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films, said he was always happy to "give a bit back".

He said: "There's also the enticement of working with some of the best actors in the world and Danny Boyle is one of the great directors of our time, he's made some of the best films of the past 30 years, so it was an easy decision really.

"It's always great to work with great people because it makes you better, I think."

He added that his piece is "one of the more light-hearted" ones.

"I'm a boy who's speaking about his love for his father and how impressed he is by the strength and size of his father. He compares him to a tree," Thewlis said.

"I'm waiting for my performance, I'm excited to do it.

"I don't know what the rest of the show is like at all, we've never all met before.

"I don't know what order we'll be going in, I don't know what I'll be doing exactly.

"That's always a little bit trepidatious just because it's the unknown but I'm not really too worried about the thing itself because it's what I do in fact, it's one of the only things I can do."

Hollywood star Josh Hartnett, who plays Ethan Chandler in the TV series Penny Dreadful, has a long-standing involvement with the charity.

"I'm working nearby in Dublin and was able to come by and be part of it and so I'm happy to help out in any way."

Hartnett, who has also starred in Black Hawk Down, Sin City and Pearl Harbour, added: "It's an effective way of getting the word out.

"These kids don't really have much of a voice to reach an audience like this if it wasn't for these actors."

Kidman, Cumberbatch, Ejiofor: the stars come out for charity

A procession of "some of the best actors in the world" took to the almost bare stage of a London theatre this week to tell the stories of poor African children.

The Children’s Monologues was Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle’s first live production since the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony and boasted Benedict Cumberbatch, Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor and James McAvoy among its extraordinary cast of stars.

The one-off charity show also featured David Thewlis,  Game of Thrones actors Kit Harington, Alfie Allen and Rose Leslie, Penny Dreadful’s Josh Hartnett, and Cressida Bonas, among others.

Each actor appeared alone on stage, under a single spotlight, to deliver a speech based on the testimony of children asked to describe a day they would never forget growing up in the small rural township of Rammulotsi.

The cast had only had the day of the performance, at the Royal Court Theatre, to rehearse. On stage, most wore the clothes in which they had turned up. There were no props.

This was all about the power of the words and if rough edges very occasionally showed – some of the actors needed recourse to the script – the audience was more than prepared to allow a little leeway.

And the rawness served only to underline the visceral, dramatic power of the testimonies. There were very some dark tales.

Kit Harington, playing a 17-year-old girl called Masekwana Goodness, had the opening line: "When I was 13-years-old I was raped. It was my uncle…" It was not untypical.

James McAvoy told the story of 13-year-old Nomsa whose brother was murdered for the fancy trainers he had saved and saved for.

Benedict Cumberbatch held the audience rapt with his depiction of Mpho, a young man struggling to overcome the hatred he felt for a Pakistani shop-owner who beat up his friend.

It wasn’t all misery. Cressida Bonas’s portrayal of a 13-year-girl who half-heartedly runs away to punish her irritating mother was full of charm and energy. She more than held her own in this elevated company and her monologue, the longest of the evening, won some of the biggest laughs.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, another Game of Thrones alumnus, as a nine-year-old car enthusiast provided more light relief.

But the more disturbing material had a cumulative effect which, ultimately, proved deeply moving. Although tickets cost a minimum of £180, no-one left feeling short-changed.

Funds raised will go to Dramatic Need, a charity (Boyle is a trustee) that works with vulnerable young people in South Africa and Rwanda, using the arts to help them change their lives.

The charity’s founder, former actress Amber Sainsbury, admitted assembling the cast was the work of many months.

"It involves a lot of asking people who know people and there’s a lot of plain begging," she said. "I saw Nicole Kidman at my local farmers’ market and literally abandoned my children to run over to her and beg her to do it. She was gracious enough to say yes.

"I wrote Benedict Cumberbatch a particularly begging letter, saying ‘Not to put pressure on you but I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t know you would make a huge difference’ so, despite the fact that he has a newborn son, he gave up the one day a week he has off from playing Hamlet at the Barbican to do this."

Earlier in the day, during rehearsals, David Thewlis had explained his reasons for taking part.

"It’s good to give a bit back and there is the enticement of working with some of the best actors in the world," said the Harry Potter star.

"Danny Boyle is one of the great directors of our time – he’s made some of the best films of the past 30 years - so it was an easy decision really."
