"I had never read anything that was set in Newfoundland before," Hartnett said to Netflix's Tudum

Josh Hartnett has captivated fans in projects like The Virgin Suicides, Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, Pearl Harbour, Black Hawk Down and Oppenheimer, and now he's transformed into a Newfoundland fisherman for the upcoming Canadian Netflix series, Below. Coming to the streaming site Oct. 8, the six-episode thriller series was filmed in the Canadian province.

"I read the first two scripts in less than an hour," Hartnett told Netflix's Tudum. "The voice was so clear, the concept was so engaging, and the character was fantastic."

"I'd never read anything like it before. I had never read anything that was set in Newfoundland before. I didn't understand the long history of Newfoundland being its own country and having its own dialect and its own very specific ancestry."

Created by Jesse McKeown, who was a writer on The Umbrella Academy, Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, who's described as "a big‑hearted but stubborn fisherman," in a small Newfoundland town. While decades have passed, he's still haunted by his father's mysterious death.

When an unidentified sea creature appears in the town, terrorizing the small community, Calvin fights to protect his hometown, including keeping his son Wade, played by Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton, and the rest of his family safe.

Joining forces with a visiting marine researcher, Fonda Howander, played by Mackenzie Davis, buried secrets on the island are revealed.

"He is a guy who has had a series of setbacks and tragedies in his life starting at a young age," Hartnett told Tudum. "He's felt that he's cursed and that his place in the world is untenable, that even his community doesn't see the point of him, and he lives in a very small community, so he feels untethered."

The series also stars Willow Kean, Ruby Stokes, Rohan Campbell and Kaleb Horn.

As McKeown told Tudum, as someone who has been visiting Newfoundland for years, he's always wanted to create a series set in the province, specifically something that can really use its unique landscape, and also showcase the warmth of the local communities.

"It's such a unique landscape and such a rugged, dangerous, isolated, scary place in a lot of ways," the statement from McKeown reads. "But then there's also this other side to it, which is that the community is so warm and the people are so funny and unique and there are so many eccentricities about the place."

In Below, the new six-episode thriller series from creator Jesse McKeown (a writer on The Umbrella Academy and 19-2), a small Canadian town is the target of a mysterious sea creature, and the terrorized residents will have to find the strength to fight back to protect their community and a vanishing way of life. Leading the fight are Hartnett, Charlie Heaton, and Mackenzie Davis. The series arrives on Netflix Oct. 8, but you can get a glimpse of the cast in the first-look photos now.

Homer Gere, Yvonne Chapman, Ellen Barkin, Willem Dafoe and Michael Douglas have rounded out the cast of Oliver Stone�s upcoming pic White Lies as principal photography commences. They join Josh Hartnett and Leila George.

The project, written and directed by Stone, marks a return to the auteur�s singular storytelling and a departure from his past work, offering an intimate and provocative drama that explores family, loss, pain and uncovers how love can change shape during our lifetimes.
Told across three generations, the film follows Jack Freeman (Hartnett), a child of divorce now repeating his parents� mistakes in his own marriage and with his own children. Feeling trapped, he embarks on a lust-filled journey to escape�only to find himself more lost than before. When he meets a woman, whose life is the opposite of his own, he begins an unexpected journey on the path of rediscovery.

Fernando Sulichin produces alongside Maximilien Arvelaiz and Jordan Gertner for Sulichin�s New Element Media. Tarak Ben Ammar, Gianluca Leurini of Eagle Pictures join James Packer and Jose Luis Manzano as executive producers

Josh Hartnett will star in and produce the action-thriller All Day & All Night

EXCLUSIVE: Josh Hartnett (Trap) will star in and produce the action-thriller All Day & All Night, written by Tommy Wirkola and John Niven and to be directed by Wirkola, the Norwegian filmmaker best known for the Violent Night and Dead Snow franchises.

Wirkola will produce alongside XYZ Films, who will finance with backing from IPR.VC, and launch worldwide sales at AFM next month. The film is set for production in 2026.

The synopsis reads: �When his daughter gets into Harvard, reformed bank robber Billy Davies (Hartnett) returns to a life of crime to come up with the tuition money. But when the bank heist goes horribly wrong, he and his crew accidentally stumble onto the set of a failing reality TV show. Now Billy must stay on air long enough to figure out an escape plan from the cops trying to arrest him and the mob trying to kill him, while the producers must keep the show on air long enough to boost their ratings and evade cancellation.�
XYZ�s President of Film Guy Danella will oversee and produce All Day & All Night for XYZ Films. Prior to joining XYZ earlier this year, Danella produced Universal�s Violent Night directed by Tommy Wirkola and Over Your Dead Body.

XYZ Films previously served as executive producer on Wirkola�s Dead Snow 2: Red Vs Dead DEAD in 2014, and more recently produced and financed Norwegian film The Trip (directed and co-written by Wirkola), which was released by Netflix in 2021. Wirkola and XYZ then joined forces to remake the film in English, helmed by Jorma Taccone and starring Jason Segel and Samara Weaving. Entitled Over Your Dead Body, the film will be released by IFC next year. Wirkola is an executive producer on the remake.

Hartnett is currently in post on MGM/Amazon�s Verity, which is being released October 2026 and based on the novel by Colleen Hoover, and Netflix miniseries Untitled Newfoundland Project. Wirkola just wrapped Universal�s Violent Night 2, scheduled for release in December 2026, and has Sony�s Shiver being released July 2026 starring Phoebe Dynevor, which he wrote, directed and produced.
