:glasses:

A Josh Hartnett Movie Marathon: The 7 Nostalgic & Swoon-Worthy Roles You Need To See
by Heather Snowden,  May 25th, 2016 at 2:38pm

It's been 15 years since we were treated to Michael Bay's dramatic retelling of Pearl Harbor, and while we're focusing on the movie's star-studded cast and its comic book connections, there's one topic I personally feel requires a much closer focus: Josh Hartnett's face.
Before you start, there's clearly a lot more to this nostalgic dreamboat than his dreamy visage, but, considering I spent much of my teen years gazing upon it, I'm venturing down this shallow route regardless. Sorry. However, if you care to join me, below you'll find a list of the seven movies that, between 1998 and 2001, introduced us to the Hollywood hunk we all know today.

So, grab your self some popcorn and buckle up folks, because this movie night fodder is "guaranteed to jack you up."
1. Halloween H20: 20 Years Later - 1998
His first feature length movie, Halloween H20, features a fresh faced Hartnett. Although the slasher received some pretty divisive reviews, his charming good looks were one of the few factors for which the movie was actually praised.

Best quote: "Mom, I am not responsible for you. That's it, I've had enough. I can't take it, Mom. He's dead. Michael Myers is dead."
2. The Faculty - 1998

Sticking on the horror train, his second movie, The Faculty, is a '90s masterpiece that not only features JH as a "drug" pushing, floppy-haired bum/genius named Zeke, it also investigates real-life concerns such as realizing all your teachers are aliens.

Best quote: "I'm about to take my chances. I leave for five minutes, and when I come back everyone's a fucking alien. Now, if I have to Men in Black your ass, you're gonna fucking take it!"
3. The Virgin Suicides - 1999

The Virgin Suicides may have heavy subject matter — what with the narrative circulating around teen suicide and isolation — but Sofia Coppola's ethereal wand makes this '90s movie a total treat for the eyes. Helped, of course, by JH's (a.k.a Trip Fontaine) super '70s hairstyle, which I've got to admit — I actually kind of dig.

Best quote: "She was the still point of the turning world, man."
4. Here On Earth - 2000

Let's talk about how lucky Leelee Sobieski's character is in this film, shall we? Like, JH's character delivers the line below to her and she falls for someone else?! Um, what?

Best quote: "No. Nobody knows you like I do. Alright? Nobody gets you like I do. We belong together. We... I love you. I love you, Sam."
5. O - 2001

Not only is JH very cute in this movie, he's also helping you learn Shakespeare, so this addition is basically just studying masked as eye-candy, which is a great start if you ask me. Plus, he plays Hugo, a character based on Iago, who, let's be real, is the best character in Othello anyway.

Best quote: "You didn't steal anything, you just borrowed it for a little while. And if you wouldn't mind I'd like to borrow you."
6. Pearl Harbor - 2001

Everyone loves a guy in uniform, so JH starring as Capt. Danny Walker is one of many reasons to check out this drama-filled gem of a movie, which also stars Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Jennifer Garner!

Best quote: "This ain't the farm and these ain't no crop dusters, I'm not playin' chicken with ya."
7. 40 Days And 40 Nights - 2001

Masquerading as Matt Sullivan the sex addict, 40 Days and 40 Nights is literally just about his abstinence, which, if you have a crush on this dude, makes for pretty entertaining viewing. He also gives his on-screen girlfriend an orgasm by touching her with an orchid; although we can all call bullshit on that straight away, let's not.

Best quote: "I'm seeing things! I swear to God, everywhere I look I'm seeing tits and ass. When I came in here, I swear to God, I thought I saw you kissing a nun. Oh, my God! You *were* kissing a nun!"

Please note: I'm aware that he also starred in Sin City, Lucky Number Slevin and Black Dahlia among other titles, the movies in this list are — as the intro states — only up until 2001.
What's your favorite Josh Hartnett movie?

From Performance to Script, Penny Dreadful Was the 2010s Show Most Robbed of Recognition
http://s7.uploads.ru/t/sXiIQ.jpg

Every week on Penny Dreadful Eva Green climbed out of the TV screen like the girl from The Ring, crawled through the broken glass on her knees, recited a Tennyson poem, burned a corset, and sat down for tea. (I'm taking only the slightest creative liberties here.) Green's performance on the Showtime drama made the word "fearless" feel quaint. She was alternately ferocious and restrained, and she played both with unflinching intensity. Looking back, it's almost impossible to believe that she did all of this with so little recognition — she should have slept on a bed of trophies — but the show went mostly unnoticed by major awards and apparently by my coworkers, which cut the legs out from under my very enthusiastic campaign to rank it among the top shows of the decade. My coworkers, like the Emmys, will answer for their crimes. But even if Penny Dreadful lurked too far under the radar to make our final list, the show still left a mark, the kind that burns just under your skin when you least expect it.

It wasn't just Eva Green. As Vanessa Ives, a devout woman tormented by supernatural forces, Green was Penny Dreadful's main attraction, but the gothic drama, which aired from 2014 to 2016 on Showtime, was a playground for an imposing cast. There was also Billie Piper, tearing into monologues as a woman reborn to be the bride of Frankenstein's monster; Timothy Dalton, a restless British explorer unsatisfied with his conquests; Josh Hartnett, simultaneously a gun-slinging Western movie hero and a werewolf; Helen McCrory, a step-on-me-please witch; and Rory Kinnear, downright Shakespearean as Frankenstein's tragic but vicious first creation. Brian Cox showed up in a couple of episodes as Josh Hartnett's dad, basically the Logan Roy of Manifest Destiny. Meanwhile, Patti LuPone played two roles, guest-starring in Season 2 as a witch banished to the moors for performing abortions and returning for the third season as a straight-shooting alienist from New York.

Penny Dreadful was a packed-full show, busy with gore, big personalities, and self-consciously beautiful dialogue (which was beautiful, so the self-consciousness worked). It treated horror like art, styling its most macabre tableaus like tasteful Romantic paintings of severed limbs. The show knew how to entertain; it drew its name from cheap sensationalized books popular in the 19th century and pulled most of its characters from classics like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Penny Dreadful could be a bloody bash when it wanted to be.

But it was also dense with ideas, and its best, most aching moments came when it stripped away the frills and exposed its brutal core. Vanessa was institutionalized before the events of the series, partly because she was ostracized for having sex with her best friend's fiancé the night before the wedding and partly because she was possessed by a demon. Everything metaphorical was literal on Penny Dreadful — but crucially, it was the shame she was made to feel, not the sex itself, that left her vulnerable to possession. At least once a season, Penny Dreadful revisited the events around Vanessa's horrific institutionalization and its aftermath, always delivering a scalding critique of Victorian fear of female sexuality.

Shame bled through the series. Hartnett's Ethan Chandler was an American sharpshooter running from his past sins as a cavalry soldier in the American Indian Wars. His werewolf side was a lens to magnify his guilt; however decent he seemed in the daylight (and Ethan was, in all other ways, a truly decent man), his colonialist violence had made him a monster. Dalton's Sir Malcolm lost his family to his imperialist adventures in Africa. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) was haunted by his pride. The Creature (Kinnear), ashamed of his appearance, lurked among the poor and ill people London refused to care for. And Victor's third creation, Lily (Piper), spent Season 3 on a murderous quest for vengeance against men, driven by the memory of the indignities she'd suffered during her life as a prostitute. Lily ultimately decided that violence rang hollow, but her anger was still thrilling; the world was to blame for the pain she'd endured, and she knew it.

Every character's personal shame was a piece of a deeper social problem. Through Penny Dreadful, creator John Logan wrestled with the way society demonizes difference, drawing parallels to his own experience as a gay man. "Grappling with the issue of who I truly was, which some would perceive as monstrous, is exactly why I wrote this series," Logan told the New York Times before the show's premiere in 2014. He recalled walking down New York's Christopher Street, the center of the state's gay rights movement, when he was young: "I realized there was a whole life here, and if I were to cross over into it, it would mark me as very different from my brother and my parents and my friends." The characters of Penny Dreadful walked through the world like that, aware that if they crossed into the underworld of 19th-century London they may be more fully themselves, but there would be no coming back.

In her fight against the idea that she was predestined to plunge the world into darkness, Vanessa clung to her Catholic faith to literally keep the demons at bay. But her battle came to an abrupt end in the third season finale, a surprise series finale that saw an exhausted Vanessa ask Ethan to end her life. Seduced to believe her worst fears about herself, she had allowed Dracula (Christian Camargo) to feed on her, unleashing a plague on London; by dying, she hoped to save her soul and deny the devil his prize, which would also save humanity. Ethan, whose fiery chemistry with Vanessa was cut far too short, killed her with the Lord's Prayer on both of their lips.

It was an ending Logan swore was purely a creative decision. But in addition to rushing the other characters' arcs, letting Vanessa choose death felt like a betrayal of her admirable persistence in the face of impossible odds. The message it sent viewers who identified with her struggle was muddled and disappointing at best. Maybe Penny Dreadful aligned uniqueness with inner demons so much that it didn't know how to untangle them in the end. The show had the tendency to over-admire, as one priest put it to Vanessa in the Season 1 finale, "the glory of suffering" — in part because it saw suffering as the unavoidable price of being a good person. Still, in the context of Penny Dreadful's very heightened world, I'll admit I was a little charmed by the fact that the real challenge of the series finale was to share Vanessa's faith, or at least understand it. Her salvation was the grace note at the end of her story.

Penny Dreadful didn't believe in living too long. Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) was miserable with his immortality, and the Creature's resurrection was a curse. The prettiest exit on the show went to Ferdinand Lyle (Simon Russell Beale), an Egyptologist who moved to Cairo midway through the final season in search of a country more accepting of his sexuality. He left Vanessa with a memorable sign-off: "Condemn me to the sand and dust, write often, and think of me only when you dance." In a way it was better that Penny Dreadful died too young, as something worth remembering with a dance.

Penny Dreadful is streaming on Netflix.

Josh Hartnett's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
https://forumupload.ru/uploads/0000/0e/cb/129/t16368.jpg

One of the most notable young actors of the late 1990s and 2000s, Josh Hartnett has gone on to appear in more than 50 films and television series. The 45-year-old actor made a big comeback to the Hollywood spotlight in 2023 after taking an extended hiatus during which Hartnett mostly took smaller acting roles in independent and foreign movies to spend more time with his family in Surrey, England. Hartnett appeared in several major 2023 productions, including Oppenheimer and Black Mirror season 6.

Hartnett rose to prominence after making his feature film debut in 1998's Halloween H20: 20 Years Later as John, the son of Jamie Lee Curtis' iconic Laurie Strode character. He would then appear in several major film productions throughout the late '90s and early 2000s including Michael Bay's notable 2001 blockbuster Pearl Harbor, the romantic comedy 40 Days and 40 Nights, and the 2004 mystery/drama Wicker Park. While he stepped away from the spotlight for a while, Hartnett's crowd-pleasing return has led people to revisit his best movies.

10 Sin City (2005)
Sin City is one of the most aesthetically innovative movies of the 21st century and stars an incredible cast that includes Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, and many others. The adaptation of Frank Miller's comic book series is an anthology movie within the titular city filled with nefarious and brutal characters. Josh Harnett appears in a brief but memorable role as The Salesman, featured in only two scenes that bookend the movie.
The film is truly a one-of-a-kind viewing experience that should be seen by all fans of the action/comic book genre, and is often referred to as one of the best cinematic graphic novel adaptations of all time. Director Robert Rodriguez's adoration of the source material is quite apparent as he lovingly recreates the frames of the comic books as if they have literally come to life on the screen. Sin CIty is filled with memorable characters, gruesome violence, and a wickedly dark sense of humor.

9 30 Days Of Night (2007)

While Josh Hartnett confirmed he turned down Superman earlier in his career, the actor didn't fully avoid comic book movies. A couple of years after Sin City, he returned to the genre for the adaptation of 30 Days of Night. Hartnett plays protagonist Eben Oleson, the lawman in a remote Alaskan town that is sent into 30 straight days of darkness. This sets the community up to be the perfect feeding ground for a pack of vicious and sadistic vampires who descend on the locals.

The unique setting is one of the reasons why 30Days of Night is one of the most memorable vampire horror movies in the past 15 years. The inescapable dread of the heroes trapped in permanent darkness is a great setup for this kind of story. The movie also features some truly terrifying cinematic vampires along with brutal and bloody violence. Hartnett makes for a great grounded hero who is brave but also in over his head.

8 Wrath Of Man (2021)

Wrath of Man was met with a lot of excitement for being the first collaboration of Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie in over 15 years. However, it was also notable for being part of Josh Hartnett's return to Hollywood. The movie stars Statham as a mysterious man who takes a job driving an armored truck. But when he proves himself to be more than a group of would-be thieves counted on, it reveals that he might have some motivations of his own.
Hartnett makes a welcome return as Dave "Boy Sweat" Hancock, a somewhat obnoxious fellow driver in Statham's company. While it is a smaller supporting role, Hartnett gets a satisfying arc as the previously cowardly Dave gets a chance to step up and be heroic in the climax. The movie itself is a gripping crime thriller that is different from Ritchie and Statham's other movies together but works as an homage to the films of directors like Michael Mann and Walter Hill.

7 Mozart And The Whale (2005)
The 2005 drama Mozart and the Whale is one of Josh Hartnett's most underrated performances that truly demonstrated his range as an actor. Hartnett and costar Radha Mitchell play two people with ASD (referred to in the movie as Asperger's Syndrome) who fall in love and form a powerful yet tumultuous relationship. Hartnett excels in one of his most complicated and challenging roles, which is wrapped around an inspirational and heartwarming unconventional love story.
The movie was written by Ron Bass, who won an Oscar for writing Rain Man. While Mozart and the Whale was a much smaller film that didn't nearly get the same attention as the acclaimed Tom Cruise-Dustin Hoffman vehicle, many critics suggested that it was a more nuanced and grounded portrait of its characters. The result is a unique and complicated romance story that is elevated by the performances of its lead actors.

6 The Faculty (1998)
Josh Hartnett broke out in Hollywood with horror movies, but while Halloween: H20 was his high-profile debut, The Faculty is his best offering from the genre. The movie was Hartnett's first collaboration with Sin City director Robert Rodriguez. It centers on a group of high school students from different social circles who band together when they uncover a plot suggesting their teachers and school staff members have been replaced by dangerous aliens.
The Faculty is a purely fun and entertaining cinematic experience that is even better to watch today than it was when it came out 25 years ago because of the added retrospective layer of '90s nostalgia. The film feels like the Scream version of an alien invasion movie with a cool youthful energy and self-aware sense of humor that doesn't take away from the thrills. The young cast is a lot of fun, including Elijah Wood and Jordana Brewster, but Hartnett steals the show as Zeke Tyler, the school bad boy turned hero.

5 Lucky Number Slevin (2006)
Lucky Number Slevin saw Josh Hartnett step into the lead role in a star-studded crime story filled with twists and turns. Hartnett stars as Slevin, a smart-mouthed young man who is mistaken for someone who owes money to two rival gangsters. Each of these dangerous crime figures offers to wipe the slate clean if Slevin assassinates the other.

The highly stylized film from director Paul McGuigan still holds up today as a fast-paced thriller with fun elements of a modern film noir. Hartnett shines in the lead role, mixing a charming sense of humor with a man out of his element. He is joined by some big-name talents, including Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and Ben Kingsley. It makes for a gripping ride from beginning to end while also having a slick sense of humor, all building to a conclusion that ties everything together with a very satisfying twist.

4 Oh Lucy! (2017)
Oh Lucy! is arguably one of Hartnett's lesser-known films, but it actually utilizes his character in a unique and engaging way. Set in Tokyo, Oh Lucy! tells the story of a disillusioned woman who finds a new life when she takes on an alter-ego through her English learning class and falls in love with her instructor. Hartnett plays the teacher named John who suddenly disappears, forcing the newly formed Lucy to figure out what happened to him in this magnificent comedy-drama.

While Hartnett made a strong comeback in Hollywood recently, Oh Lucy is a perfect reminder that he was still making great movies even if they were not reaching the mainstream as much as his past projects. It is a quirky and charming film that made a decent splash despite its small size. Lead actor Shinobu Terajima earned a Best Female Lead nomination from the Film Independent Spirit Awards while writer-director Atsuko Hirayanagi was nominated for Best First Feature.

3 The Virgin Suicides (1999)
The Virgin Suicides was one of the movies that helped Hartnett earn his reputation as a teen heartthrob early in his career, despite the dark nature of the story. The compelling yet tragic film was the first directorial effort by Sofia Coppola. It stars Kirsten Dunst as one of several daughters in a strict household where their parents' attempts to protect them from the mature world lead to tragedy. Hartnett has a supporting role as Trip Fontaine, the popular boy in school.

The coming-of-age teen drama has become a cult classic of adolescent angst and is a stunning debut from Coppola. The Virgin Suicides has a dreamlike quality that adds to the haunting nature of the story and where it ends up. Dunst was able to transition into her era of serious movie roles while Hartnett brought a lot of charm and nuance to a character who could have been one-dimensional.

2 Black Hawk Down (2001)
In the same year that Josh Hartnett starred in the critically-reviled war movie Pearl Harbor, the actor also starred in one of the most acclaimed war movies of all time.Black Hawk Down depicts the incredible true story of a tragic 1993 United States military operation in Somalia gone terribly wrong. Hartnett stars as Eversmann, one of the main soldiers who gets caught in a vicious gunfight that destroys two American Black Hawk helicopters.
The intense Ridley Scott film is full of gripping action sequences and brilliant cinematography and sound effects and also stars an ensemble cast that includes Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy, Orlando Bloom, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Hartnett is very much the heart of the movie as a soldier who is fighting for what he believes is a just cause only to be disillusioned by the poor leadership, yet heartened by the strength of his fellow soldiers. Scott throws the audience right into the warzone, which makes for a visceral experience.

1 Oppenheimer (2023)
While Josh Hartnett had been gradually appearing in high-profile movies in the 2020s, Oppenheimer was the movie that truly cemented his Hollywood comeback. Christopher Nolan's Best Picture-winning epic stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer in an exploration of his work to build the atomic bomb, his guilt over its use during World War II, and the aftermath of his career. Hartnett plays a pivotal role in the epic film as fellow physicist Ernest Lawrence, a friend and colleague of Oppenheimer's.

Nolan creates an engrossing and layered examination of a complex historical figure and the fascinating story he was a part of. It is a compelling look at the collaboration and conflict between science and the military, a thrilling political story about the government's paranoia of communists in America, and a heartbreaking depiction of the downfall of Oppenheimer. While the Oppenheimer cast is a huge star-studded affair, Josh Hartnett shines in the supporting role that reminds audiences of his commanding screen presence.
