Screen to Stage: Rain Man

You could hear the screams of horror when it was announced that Hollywood totty Josh Hartnett had signed on to star in Rain Man in the West End. Admittedly, they calmed down somewhat when it was revealed that he'd be taking the Tom Cruise role rather than the Dustin Hoffman one, but even so the theatre seemed to be full of a) serious theatre-goers hoping to be proved right in their prejudices and b) women with stars in their eyes / женщины со звёздами в глазах    Neither group, I suspect, got quite what they were hoping for.

The thing is that Hartnett's actually rather good. As Charlie Babbitt, a selfish wheeler-dealer with a father complex the size of Windsor Castle, he's callous and brash and clearly damaged goods. He's also adept at delivering dialogue at roughly the speed of a Lambourghini Gallardo in top gear, which is a good thing since the role very much demands it, and he doesn't shy away from the fact that Charlie's kind of a bad-tempered little shit throughout the film. In the latter scenes of the piece, he taps into some hidden reserves of acting ability and delivers a genuinely moving turn. In other words, he's not just there as totty.

The strange thing about his performance is that, of the two leads here - Adam Godley takes the Dustin Hoffman role as Raymond Babbitt - it's Hartnett who has trouble escaping the shadow of his movie predecessor. Tom Cruise's performance in that role is one of the great underrated turns in movie history, and it colours every single move that Hartnett makes. While Cruise wasn't as blatantly awards-friendly or as eyecatching as Hoffman (who might as well have formulated the Tropic Thunder maxim about how to win Oscars), it was a major step in his transition from the young, dumb and full of come roles like Top Gun to more actorly turns like Born On The Fourth Of July. Hartnett comes close to matching Cruise, but never quite escapes his shadow to make the role his own.

Adam Godley, meanwhile, was faced with the daunting prospect of taking on a role that won its original actor an Oscar and was universally lauded as a pinnacle of Method technique. He cleverly deals with that by pretty much ignoring it - he emphatically avoids any imitation of Hoffman's still-distinctive Raymond and instead creates a sort of personalityless personality. His Raymond has something of the automaton about him, a distinctive lack of ability to interact with other people that makes him a pleasant blank, an appealing alien. The result is often funny, often tragic, but never caricature or copycat, and that's something to applaud.

The rest of the cast is more of a mixed bunch. The girlfriend, whose name I'm afraid I've totally forgotten and can't find online, was a bit drama school in her awfully well projected delivery, and none of the supporting cast had any real opportunity to shine. The play is staged interestingly though, sliding walls and walkways giving the impression of motel rooms and bars and airline lounges smoothly and quickly - which to some extent compensates for the fact that this is a road movie with no road, a story about a car with a car that never appears. The production also, oddly, breaks for the interval just after the big reveal about Raymond and Charlie's imaginary friend "Rain Man", stilting the rhythm and rather breaking the tension of the piece.

Still, for its humour and its pathos and the fact that it does raise a lump in the throat, this is still worth a look - especially if it's been a while since you've seen the film. Also, Hartnett's, like, totally dreamy.

ну конечно хоть мне запретили фоткать ну я естесственно фоткала....................я совершенно случайно узнала что он там ..........мы решили погулять по SOHO  и я случайно увидела плакат.....
