Hunk Josh excited to trace his roots while in town for IFTA bash
HOLLYWOOD hunk Josh Hartnett is jetting to Ireland for this month's Irish Film and Television Awards.
The top actor - who starred in movie blockbusters Pearl Harbor and Black Hawk Down - is coming to Dublin to be a guest presenter at the glitzy showbiz bash on February 20.
Hartnett, who was raised in the US but is of Irish descent, is planning to stay here for several days to catch up with friends and relatives.
Last night the star spoke exclusively to the Sunday World about his Irish visit.
"I'm thrilled to attend the Irish Film and Television Awards and spend some more time in my ancestors' country. I'm proud of my Irish roots and really looking forward to being part of this great night," Hartnett said.
The star will present an IFTA on the night and will take the opportunity to catch up with family. "My father is half Irish and I've spent quite a bit of time in Ireland," he said.
Family
"I've been to the south west coast a few times because that's where my family is from originally, around the Dingle Peninsula," added the 6ft 3in star.
The actor is one of Hollywood's biggest heartthrobs but has often opted to avoid blockbusters in recent years - he famously turned down the chance to play Spiderman in a role that later went to Tobey Maguire. His latest movie Dear John, a romantic drama, opened in the US this weekend.
In recent years he's also turned his hand to movie producing and is rumoured to be meeting film executives here during his visit to moot future projects.
Hartnett is the first big international guest who's been confirmed to attend the IFTAs, which has attracted stars like Mel Gibson and Mischa Barton in previous years.
He'll join all of our native big-name stars, many of who will be competing for awards on the night.
Guests who will take to the red carpet include Colin Farrell and Aidan Quinn, who've been nominated for acting awards, and young actresses Saoirse Ronan and Sarah Bolger.
Busy Saoirse will be jetting to London for the BAFTAs the following morning as she's been nominated in both ceremonies for her performance in The Lovely Bones.
Inglorious Basterds star Michael Fassbender - who's currently shooting a movie with Hollywood director Steven Soderbergh in the Capital - will take a night off to attend the awards, which are taking place in The Burlington Hotel.
Stars
In Treatment star Gabriel Byrne, directors Neil Jordan and Jim Sheridan and actress Nora Jane Noone have also joined the growing guest list for the night.
The public get to have their say in the People's Choice Award for Best International Actress, where the nominees include Penelope Cruz and Meryl Streep.
