Another Movie is Shooting on the Streets of Detroit

By now most of you have probably heard that Josh Hartnett is in town. But, if you haven’t yet, Josh Hartnett is in town! He’s working on a movie with Rosario Dawson and a long list of other actors and actresses, including Gena Rowlands (The Notebook) and Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl, Easy A). The film, “Parts Per Billion”, is an independent movie about “three couples which are forced to make life altering decisions in the face of a disastrous war”.

The crew just started filming about a week ago throughout many areas of Detroit. A couple of the most widely reported places that they have been spotted shooting are Belle Isle and around the campus of Wayne State. MLive has a list of pictures and tweets from the set of the movie that you can check out here. The producer of “Parts Per Billion”, Molly Hassell, is no stranger to Michigan as she has been here in the recent past to work on “Vamps” and “TheGiant Mechanical Man”. It sounds like they should be in town for a few more weeks working on the movie.

When the actors aren't on set, they have been seen around some of the hot spots in Metro-Detroit. Our friend and frequent reader, Jessica Knapik, had the pleasure of meeting Josh Hartnett last week while behind the bar at Imperial (Ferndale). Photos: See where 'Parts Per Billion' - a Rosario Dawson-Josh Hartnett film - shot in Detroit

DETROIT, MI - It wasn't just another day at the office Monday for 61-year-old Sharky Katty, owner of the Temple-Trumbull Market for the past 36 years.

Katty and his colleague Stacy Markham, 49, closed the store so crews for a film called "Parts Per Billion" - starring Rosario Dawson and Josh Hartnett - could film a disaster scene there.

"They said they wanted to make a scene," Katty said. "They said they wanted to make it look like the end of the world.

"Real nice guys, and a couple of girls, and they had people put everything back on the shelves in order when they were done."

I caught up with Katty and Markham on Thursday afternoon to get some insight about the film, and found out quite a bit about the history behind the business.

It's about 6,500 square feet, sits at Trumbull and Temple, is adjacent to the Motor City Casino, and nearly got looted by wild celebratory (and likely heavily intoxicated) Tigers fans in 1984 after the team clinched the World Series down the street.

There's also been a few robbery attempts, but nothing quite as exciting as Monday's movie shoot; it included some actors and actresses who laid outside on the sidewalk during the shoot so they could look like dead bodies.

"Never thought I would see a movie get filmed here," said Markham, a lifelong Detroit resident who shot video on his cell phone of the film's empty store setup.

Katty told me crews for the film paid him to use the store for filming, and believe "Parts Per Billion" will hit theaters within the next six to eight months.

Katty said he believes in a Detroit resurgence, has no problem with the city being used for a disaster-related movie, and definitely plans on seeing it when it hits the big screen.

"It doesn't bother me at all; it's a movie!," he said smiling. "I think it's really interesting."

The film received incentives and tax credits from the Michigan Film Office last month and is expected to hire 73 Michigan workers with a full-time equivalent of nine jobs.

A synopsis of the film, courtesy of a film office press release:

"The film tells the interwoven stories of three couples forced to make life altering decisions in the face of a disastrous war. Inspired and sometimes blinded by their love, Len, Mia, Andy, Esther, Anna and Erik are as flawed and beautiful as any of the billions who are facing this human-made biological disaster."

Film crews have appeared to be all over Metro Detroit in recent days, and several people who are part of the film have shared photos and insight about the work being done on Twitter and Instagram.

Penn Badgley, Teresa Palmer, Alexis Bledel & More Make Up ‘Parts Per Billion

After securing Frank Langella, Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett and Gena Rowlands, the remaining cast for the indie feature Parts Per Billion has been locked down. With production already beginning for Brian Horiuchi‘s directorial debut, we’ve got word that Penn Badgley (who is attempting a career shift from Gossip Girl to features), Teresa Palmer (Take Me Home Tonight), Alexis Bledel (Sin City) and Hill Harper (He Got Game) have joined the ensemble that  follows three couples whose encounter with a “reality-shaking event” will rip their relationships apart.     Los Angeles, CA (December 12, 2012) — AKA/Bow Street Films (AKA/BSF) announced today that Penn Badgley (“Greetings from Tim Buckley”), Teresa Palmer (“I am Number Four”), Alexis Bledel (“Gilmore Girls”) and Hill Harper (“CSI: New York”) have joined the ensemble cast for writer/director Brian Horiuchi’s much anticipated PARTS PER BILLION. The film is currently scheduled to shoot through Christmas in Detroit.

    AKA/BSF is a new production outfit that allows filmmakers to produce high quality product with great stars for a sensible price. Currently, AKA/BSF has just completed the thriller THE RAMBLER, starring Dermot Mulroney, which will screen in the Midnight Movie section at Sundance next month.

К настоящему времени большинство из вас, наверное, слышали, что Джош Хартнетт в Детройте. Но, если вы еще не слышали - Джош Хартнетт в Детройте! Он работает над фильмом с Розарио Доусон и длинным списком других актеров и актрис, в том числе Джиной Роулендс («The Notebook») и Пенном Бэджли («Gossip Girl», «Easy A»). Фильм "Одна миллиардная доля" является независимым фильмом о «трех парах, которые вынуждены принимать решения, меняющие их жизнь, перед лицом разрушительной войны".
