Penny Dreadful Is Glorious
The psychosexual monster mash (creepy trailer below) premiered its pilot to a packed room. Within the first few minutes, we. were. terrified. What could have been chalked up to B-movie hodgepodge turned out to be a masterful horror opus. And here’s why: Creator John Logan wrote screenplays for three Oscar-winning films (Skyfall, Gladiator, and Hugo); American Beauty and Revolutionary Road director Sam Mendes executive-produces; and J.A. Bayona, the master of suspense behind The Impossible and The Orphanage, directs the first two episodes. Which is not to mention that Eva Green finally has a role she can sink her teeth into and Josh Hartnett has dropped the ’90s heartthrob shtick.
Our takeaway: May 11 cannot come soon enough.
