They just shot a scene in my area. We had taken my son out to the park when he saw Samuel L Jackson, it terrified the bejesus out of him. I must say for the hype about celebrities they really are just regular people doing their job. Samuel was polite, considerate and he didn't seem to mind that my two year old kept wanting to see the "big trucks". He didn't even mind it when his kids and my kid played together. I honestly didn't know what to expect but that was above and beyond it. It will make a great story to tell my kid when he grows up. Even the cast and the crew were awesome! They made a great first impression and I know in our neighborhood they will be welcomed back anytime. I can see on the other hand how they could get tired of being harrassed. He makes great films, is a good actor and he's not a snob. I hope that he gets a good impression of the people of Calgary because we really are a good city with good people.

It was a small kids park right beside Confederation golf course. I live on 15th st NW so it is almost like a collection of small cul-de-sacs in a very private area that has a golf course along one entire side for the whole neighborhood.

I saw them shooting at the mustard seed last night so i stood around for a while, kathryn morris showed up and was very nice, she posed for a picture and signed an autograph for me, the josh hartnett came out of his trailor and posed for a picture and signed an autograph as well. I also met samuel L jackson he was reluctant to sign an autograph but he still signed one none-the-less but wouldnt pose for a picture because he was still in his costume. It was sure exciting being able to talk to them, i cant wait to see the movie and try to recognize parts of the city.

Well I know last night (July 11th) they were shooting near 1217 - 1 St SW (The Castle Pub) I go there every Tuesday and they were there yesterday and two weeks ago too.

They are shooting at Melrose Cafe and bar for the next two days, as well as across the street from my work at 13th Av SE and McLeod Trail. they are setting it all up today, huge site!

They took down the tents and trailers at McLeod and 13th Av SE this morning. I think they must have done filming last night, because the food guy was cooking up stuff when I left work. I am not sure, but I think they might be leaving, I know some of them are already done because I know someone connected with the set.

Movie magic in our midst
Herald's newsroom used as set for film Resurrecting the Champ Stephen Hunt, Calgary Herald

Published: Saturday, July 22, 2006

At 10 o'clock on a July Monday night, Alan Alda sits in a Calgary Herald meeting room known as the Fishbowl, for its glass wall, playing cards with film director Rod Lurie.

They're playing a game called Spite and Malice, which involves two decks of cards and ultimately, a lot of cursing.

It's not a scene from a movie, however; it's a scene between scenes.

This week, the Herald is the site of a Hollywood movie shoot, as the production of Resurrecting the Champ, starring Alda, Josh Hartnett and Samuel L. Jackson, takes over the newsroom -- or perhaps shares it, since we are still here.

A few high-profile visitors also drop by, such as actress Scarlett Johansson, Hartnett's girlfriend, which causes everyone's opinion of hanging out in the newsroom to rise dramatically.

All of which raises the (very Canadian) question: Why us? To paraphrase Rick, Humphrey Bogart's character in Casablanca, of all the gin joints in the world, why did Hollywood have to walk into ours?

At the helm of Resurrecting the Champ is 44-year-old director Rod Lurie, who directed the Oscar-nominated The Contender starring Joan Allen and created the ABC TV series Commander in Chief starring Geena Davis. To him, choosing the Herald boils down to a certain '70s newspaper film about Watergate starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman.

"You've got all the lights," Lurie says, pointing out into the newsroom at a ceiling decorated with a familiar -- and a little bleak -- landscape of rectangular fluorescent light panels. "It's very All the President's Men.

"It's the king of the newspaper films," Lurie says. "And I personally believe it's the best American film ever made. "

Resurrecting the Champ, an independent production developed initially by Mike Medavoy and financed by Yari Films, (the producers of Crash), is about a young Denver Times sportswriter (Hartnett) who discovers a homeless man who was once a promising boxer (Jackson), and how the story he writes about Jackson's character changes both their lives.

Because the crew needs to shoot in the same newsroom where Herald staffers assemble the paper each day, they are obliged, like a summer subletter, to share the space.

This produces the odd spectacle of duelling productions: on one end of the newsroom, there's a movie production, with a crew of nearly 100 (mostly Calgarians) -- who do a lot of waiting around between takes -- Steadicams, dollys and movie stars covertly hanging out, picking up tips on how to act like a sportswriter.

On the other end of the newsroom is the busy staff of a daily newspaper doing their work and acting -- not very convincingly -- as if famous movie people hang out in the newsroom every day.

Sometimes, as in the case of business reporters Paul Haavardsrud and Lisa Schmidt, scenes are actually shot at the work station across the aisle from their desks, creating an even odder blend of fantasy and reality as the reporters become extras.

Resurrecting the Champ is being shot in six weeks, a tight schedule, and there's no time to waste. Lurie keeps things rolling, and once he feels he's got his best take from the actors, he moves on to the next scene.

Does Hollywood get the newspaper business right? Do they capture the nitty-gritty of the daily reporter's life or do they, well, go all Hollywood on us? At Hartnett's Denver Times desk, there is an orange and blue plastic Denver Broncos football helmet, a cut-out photo of him playing with his son, a British boxing magazine, and a stack of empty spiral notebooks next to a stack of boxing VHS tapes.

It sounds authentic enough. What's wrong with this picture?

"There is not enough junk food on Josh's desk," the Herald's Lisa Schmidt says.

Haavardsrud, the wordsmith, has no problem with the set decoration, but takes exception to the film dialogue.

"I noticed, in the one scene, where the editor goes, 'nice article' and he goes 'thank you,' " Haavardsrud says. "Well, no one (in a newsroom) ever says (the word) 'article' because it has too many syllables. And they left out the part after the editor leaves, when the reporter goes, 'He butchered my lede (lead paragraph).' "

Meanwhile, the scene in the newsroom bullpen is shot and reshot with extras bustling to and fro in the background. Hartnett, in a khaki jacket and jeans, walks through wearing that unique blend of anxiety, boredom and obsession that a reporter might.

Lurie watches the scene through the monitor, listening to the dialogue on headphones, alongside director of photography Adam Kane, first assistant director Pierre Tremblay and continuity person Nancy McDonald, who holds a ring binder containing the script along with snapshots of the scenes, to help her keep track of things like light, hair and wardrobe.

"I'm sort of quality control," McDonald says. "I get to go around and tell people when they're screwing up. I was the one who got to tell Brad Pitt (in the upcoming Jesse James, which was also shot in and around Calgary) that he was screwing up his lines."

How did Mr. Pitt take criticism? "Oh, he was very good about it," she says. "He really liked the script, and wanted to say the lines the way they were written."

Crew members such as McDonald play a huge role in keeping things running smoothly. Lurie and producer Marc Frydman both sing the praises of the local cast and crew.

"Our budget called for every single role to be flown in -- every single one," Lurie says, "from New York or Los Angeles or maybe Vancouver.

"And I would say I've cast 25 roles in Calgary. They're really strong actors here."

As for the crew, Lurie says, "There's a sense of calm here that's a little bit unnerving. This crew gets everything done on time, they do it without complaint, they're working horrible hours, but yet they're cool, calm, collected and good."

Producer Frydman chose Calgary partly because of economic incentives, partly because of Calgary's resemblance to Denver, and partly (the largest part) because the city offers filmmakers something major metropolises do not: a unique blend of smaller city cosiness and the look of a big city in the United States.

"When you think about it, from downtown to Mount Royal, a residential area with manicured lawns, it's unbelievable," says Frydman. "If you were looking for that (combination of locations) in New York City, you'd have to go to New Jersey and it's an hour's drive. Here, it's five minutes. It's (Calgary) very well set up that way."

The night is still young, even if Alda is not (he's 70). At 10:30, it's dinner time for cast and crew. A few more slip out into the parking lot for a cigarette after dinner. There are still scenes to shoot before the production wraps, around four in the morning. Whether you're Josh Hartnett -- who is in every scene of the film and learns pages of new dialogue every day -- Alan Alda, Rod Lurie or the crew, the 15 minutes of fame Andy Warhol promised us seem to come at a steep price, at least in terms of REM sleep.

"You get used to having no life," says two-time Emmy nominee Gail Kennedy, a vivacious redhead who does the makeup.

"A movie crew that has been filming in Denver attended Monday's morning session. One of the stars of the film, Josh Hartnett, is playing a sports reporter and he actually interviewed quarterback Jake Plummer for a scene after the Broncos finished that first practice."

Parker: Elway's steakhouse becomes movie set

August 1, 2006

When you put the words action and Elway's in the same sentence, you're usually talking about the singles scene at the bar.
But on Monday, action took on a different meaning when Hollywood descended on the Cherry Creek steakhouse to film a scene for Resurrecting the Champ, starring Samuel L. Jackson as a homeless has-been fighter who makes a comeback.

Jackson, however, was not part of the Denver scene. Instead, heartthrob Josh Hartnett, 6-year-old Canadian actor Dakota Goyo and our own John Elway hit their marks and delivered their lines during the daylong shoot.

The scene on Elway's patio involves Hartnett, as an aspiring sports writer, having lunch with his son, Teddy. Hartnett's character, Erik, boasts to his son that he knows the Broncos Hall-of-Famer, a huge stretch of the truth. When Elway, along with his agent, played by L.A. actor George Green, are seated at a nearby table, Teddy is heck-bent on meeting his hero.

"Look, that's John Elway," Teddy says to his dad. Hartnett tries to hustle his son out of the restaurant, but the tyke makes a dash over to Elway's table and introduces himself.

"Do you play football?" Elway asks the young fan. "Let me see your hand," he says holding his palm against Teddy's. "Your hands are twice as big as mine were at your age, I give you about three years."

Erik hustles his progeny out of the restaurant. "Goodbye Mr. Elway," Teddy says. "I hope you come back to the Broncos next year."

Elway, who's no stranger to lights, camera, action from shooting his car dealership commercials, said he was contacted by director Rod Lurie's team about two months ago.

"I thought it would be fun," Elway said. "I was looking forward to meeting Josh, but my stress level's terrible - I'm joking when I say that."

Local makeup artist Dee Sandella touched up Elway's movie makeup. "I need all the help I can get," he said.

The movie, which wrapped shooting Monday after filming Broncos QB Jake Plummer at Dove Valley and the Coliseum, where fighters duked it out years ago, is scheduled to be released next year.

FLEETING FAME: When Elway's servers Vanessa Harris and Lindsay Spencer showed up to work the lunch shift Monday, they figured they'd be taking orders and refilling drink glasses.

Instead, Hollywood came calling. The servers were pressed into service as extras in the movie Resurrecting the Champ. Harris dropped off the lunch tab at Hartnett's table and retrieved the paid bill.

Spencer escorted Elway and his "agent," Green, to their table on the patio.

"We thought we'd be working lunch, instead we're cast in a movie," Spencer said. "I'm a movie star."

The gals joked that they would soon be giving up their day jobs and moving to Hollywood. "We're moving there and we'll be roomies," Harris said, laughing.

SCHMIDT ON THE SIDE: Elway's restaurant co-owner Tim Schmidt brought his son, Conner, down to the steakhouse-turned-movie-set on Monday to watch all the Hollywood hubbub.

"It's a fantastic opportunity to create more talk about the restaurant," he said about the attention. "It brings Hollywood to Denver, and it showcases the city and the (Cherry Creek) mall."

From inside the bar, Schmidt watched his pal Elway rehearse his scene. "I'm a better actor than John," he teased. "He's just more well known."

EAVESDROPPING on a woman watching the movie shoot at Elway's: "John should do OK. He's much better than Dealin' Doug or Jake Jabs."

Plummer nodded toward a man standing on the Denver practice field. See him? Sure, he's Josh Hartnett, the heartthrob from "Pearl Harbor" and other big flicks. The funny part, Plummer explained, was Hartnett's role as a sportswriter, which the actor learned to do in less than one day.

"Best interview I've ever had," Plummer said, laughing.

Now, I'm not too smart, but I think it was a jab at my profession. In five minutes on the job, Hartnett asked the best questions that Plummer has ever heard.

dailynews.com
abclocal.go.com
sltrib.com
canada.com
heraldextra.com
twincities.com

RESURRECTING THE CHAMP

U.S.A., 2006, 113 Minutes, color & b/w

For all his ambition, Erik (Josh Hartnett) is a Denver sports reporter fast on his way to being yesterday's news. His writing lacks personality, and his editor, Metz (Alan Alda), is unwilling to pull him off the boxing beat. To make matters worse, his personal life is down for the count. Recently separated from his wife, Erik tries to maintain his good standing with their young son. When he rescues a homeless man, "the champ" (Samuel L. Jackson), from some local hoods, he learns that the destitute man is actually a former boxing champion thought to be long dead, and it appears that Erik has stumbled onto a knockout story.

Rod Lurie proves that he is an intricate storyteller here, discovering in the material a range of complex emotions and poignancy. Bolstered by subtle performances from Hartnett and Jackson, the film asks what it means to be a man, not a champ. It grapples with relationships between fathers and sons and taps into a core component of masculine self-deception--an urge to misrepresent. Hamstrung by his own sense of failure, Erik tries so hard to appear special in his son's eyes that he lies about being friends with star athletes. But in befriending the champ, who has his own burdens, Erik takes steps to come to terms with his family, the ghost of his father, and his own capacity for forgiveness.— John Nein
