Behind the scenes of this ‘big, gaudy, lurid sort of show’, the prosthetics, wardrobe and props departments are the real stars. The squeamish need not apply

Behind every vampire is a great prosthetics department. And props. And wardrobe. The first series of Penny Dreadful, Sky Atlantic’s slick gothic-horror period drama, was successful enough that another series was commissioned. It will air early in the summer.
On the day we visit the set at Ardmore Studios in Co Wicklow, there is less than a fortnight’s filming to go, although the cast and crew have been based here for more than six months. John Logan, who wrote the James Bond film Skyfall, is the creator of Penny Dreadful and has written the scripts for both series. He says he has been thinking about the story and characters for more than 13 years.
“Season one was introducing the audience to the characters,” he says. “In season two, I get to play with them. It’s like moving chess pieces around the board.” Among the cast are Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper and Rory Kinnear. Spoiler alert: if you thought Billie Piper’s character, Brona, had died in season one, well, she’s on set today.
Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray is a character in Penny Dreadful. The first set we visit is his house. It’s a chilly morning, with a brisk wind, as we tour the warehouses where the sets are located. It is bloody freezing in Dorian Gray’s sternly grand house, which we enter by the hall, where a stairway goes halfway up to nowhere.

Dorian Gray’s ballroom/gallery, the scene of various large gatherings in the show, is very impressive. There are copies of some 147 paintings from galleries around the world; the show paid some €250,000 for the rights to reproduce them. These high-resolution images are printed on canvas and set in frames bought all over Europe, which are painted gold. Collectively, they give an impression of great wealth and power, and the whole room is pretty intimidating.
But the next set we’re shown is far more intimidating. It’s Frankenstein’s lab, and it looks properly scary. There is, apparently, a mile of rope in this set. There are anatomical drawings, a copper bath and a slab where it looks as if very nasty things happen. This is the slab where one of the characters was brought back to life.
There are abacuses, glass jars filled with what looks like formaldehyde, pipettes, and all manner of sharp, shiver-inducing medieval-looking implementsg. The detail everywhere is astounding. Everything looks authentic and complete; even the dust is not there by accident.
In the prosthetics department there are boxes stacked high on shelves, marked variously “Back bristle hair”, “vampire paints”, “goat fur”, “rat fur” and “boar rugs”. Coyote and rabbit too. I really don’t want to find out if the rat fur is real. A man is carefully sculpting and painting what looks like a human eyeball.
Looking away squeamishly, I see a woman bent over what looks like a flayed scalp. She is sewing real human hair into it. It looks like a cross between surgery and embroidery. It’s beautiful and skilled and grotesque all at the same time. I have to remind myself that the scalp is only a prop, as are the bits of limbs and eviscerated torsos lying around. They’re not real, but they look very convincing.
Keeping it real
Nick Dudman is the producer in the prosthetics department. He worked on what he refers to as “the Potter movies”. In Penny Dreadful, lots of unpleasant things happen to people. There’s a lot of blood and gore, and eviscerations, and his job is to make it look real. “If a small child is eviscerated on screen, it has to affect you mentally,” he says briskly. “It has to look convincing.”
On one level, it seems a pretty disturbing work environment, surrounded by bits of bodies and entrails. But as Dudman points out, although it looks utterly convincing, none of it is real. To him and his team, it is simply art.
It takes 15-18 days to shoot one hour of the show. Given the amount of time needed in make-up for characters such as the Creature, played by Rory Kinnear, days have to start well before 4am. He appears to be missing half his skull, an illusion that takes between three and four hours a day to create.
“My four-year-old son got a bit of a fright when I skyped him for the first time,” he says. Kinnear is between takes, standing in a long wax jacket in a corridor, holding a styrofoam cup, half his skull absent. All the cast and crew have been living in Ireland while they are shooting. Has he ever been tempted to go out on the town for a night with half his head peeled back off his face? Sadly not. Something is muttered about “insurance”.
Timothy Dalton is also between scenes. He plays Sir Malcolm Murray in the show, a man who is seeking his kidnapped daughter. It’s fair to say Dalton is looking forward to going home to sunny Los Angeles.
“What’s it been like?” he repeats languidly when asked by another hack about his months spent working on the show and living in Dalkey. “It’s been wet, dank, miserable and depressing. I go to bed in the dark and get up in the dark, and I’m concentrating on an imaginary world. After five months, it’s like a stimulus depriver. Like Chinese torture. Does that answer your question?” he says to the British journalist, who looks both shaken and stirred.
Then coffee arrives and he cheers up a bit. “What I liked about the script is that it wasn’t superficial,” he says. “It’s a big, gaudy, lurid sort of show, in which questions of evil and love and what it means to be a human being are addressed.”
“I sleep like I’m dead every night,” Billie Piper quips. Her character, Brona, was dead but now she lives again, as Bride of Frankenstein. She is wearing a long tweed skirt with a tiny waist. “There’s a lot more blood in season two.”
Four sets of clothes
All that blood means that most characters have at least four sets of the same costume for continuity. The costume department is overseen by Italian designer Gabriella Pescucci, won an Oscar for her costumes on The Age of Innocence and who we’re told worked with Fellini.
There are at least 20 dressmakers beavering away, and I’m chuffed to see they favour the same Ikea spotlight as I do. We might not all have an Oscar at home, but I have the same Ikea lamp as the one Pescucci uses in her workshop.
We’re shown racks and racks of the most beautiful cloaks, dresses, coats, skirts, wraps and blouses. Many of them belong to Vanessa, played by Eva Green. Most are made from scratch, with a combination of new and vintage fabric, bolts of which are piled up everywhere and look like rainbows that have been through a blender. Some incorporate genuine pieces of Victorian garments, such as jet-fringed black lace.
As for the props department, it’s like one giant warehouse crammed with antiques. There are dozens of chandeliers, chairs, sets of crystal and china, rugs, picture frames, chests of drawers, piles of books – and that’s only one small part of it all.
More than 300 crew members work on Penny Dreadful, and it shows. Behind these vast sets, with their meticulous and consistent detail, is an enormous amount of work, which “keeps everyone in the moment, and in character”, explains Simon Russell, who plays the eccentric Egyptologist Sir Ferdinand Lyle.

They are counting on the fact that the supernatural drama about the witchy Vanessa Ives and her coterie of classic monsters have put viewers in some kind of spell.
Showtime sprinkled its fairy dust all through Showtime Anytime where it can be viewed on on desktop, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, Kindle Fire, Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Apple TV streaming players. The episodes can also be downloaded for free on iTunes.
Starring Eva Green and Timothy Dalton, Showtime’s psychological thriller Penny Dreadful comes from John Logan, who’s been nominated for three Oscars.
Next season Penny Dreadful will have a ten episodes arc. According to synopses running around the net, when we next return we will find Vanessa Ives and the cowboy wolfman Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) getting devilishly closer. Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani) are still fighting the monsters they should embrace. The monsters, the evergreen Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and only slightly green Creature (Rory Kinnear), have their own karma to relive.
Patti LuPone joins the series next season. Helen McCrory returns as the Theosophist (I’m guessing) Evelyn Poole, who performs séances under the alias Madame Kali, which could almost be Madame Blavatsky. Simon Russell Beale returns as Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle.

TV Review: ‘Penny Dreadful,’ Season 2

Awash in gothic atmosphere and tasty performances, “Penny Dreadful” puts a face on evil in its second season, and feels considerably richer for it. That countenance would belong to Helen McCrory, who plays the head of a Lucifer-worshipping coven, eager to hand over the psychic Vanessa (Eva Green) to the Prince of Darkness. John Logan’s creation still feels haphazard at times in the way it throws together macabre figures — a bit like the Universal monster mashes of the ’40s — but viewers who spend less time dwelling on details and go with “Penny’s” crimson-streaked flow will more than get their money’s worth.
Just to recap season one, Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) assembled a team to help him attempt to recover his demon-stolen daughter, including the aforementioned Vanessa, gunslinging American cowboy Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and a very young Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), whose chickens — OK, in this case immortal Creature (Rory Kinnear) — have come home to roost.
With the child-saving arc having been unsuccessfully completed, Vanessa now finds herself plagued by haunting visions, while Ethan is grappling with the after-effects of a lycanthropic blackout that has made him a slightly modified variation on an American werewolf in London. And if that weren’t bad luck enough, Frankenstein has agreed to create a bride for his lonely monster from the remains of Ethan’s former paramour (Billie Piper), which, if it’s anything like the 1935 classic, does not promise to end well. (Piper does get to sport something approaching her own hair, minus white streaks, for which both she and the hairstyling department should be grateful.)
In season one, Logan’s shadowy beasties never added up to much, and the rules for thwarting them stayed vague throughout. Yet the show remained entertaining and watchable largely because of its sensuous Hammer Film-like qualities, the wonderful casting and its modest wrinkles on these familiar characters.

That’s mostly true again in these initial episodes, with McCrory (perhaps best known Stateside for the Harry Potter movies and for portraying former British PM Tony Blair’s wife Cherie in “The Queen”) positively devouring scenery as the ruthless enchantress, convincingly spitting out lines like, “The Master won’t be denied his prize.”
The series format also affords Logan and his collaborators (James Hawes directed the premiere) to assiduously tease out stories at an unhurried pace, pausing to explore the lusty antics of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) even though they remain somewhat peripheral to the rest of the proceedings. That’s not a problem, at least if the first season is any guide, since the show derives its kick from the getting there, not the destination.
Sumptuously shot in Ireland, the series thus represents a fine and frankly shrewdly calculated addition to Showtime’s roster, in the same way any savvy manager wants to assemble a diversified portfolio. If that sounds somewhat dismissive, remember that producing a credible gothic drama isn’t as easy as it sounds (just ask Netflix’s “Hemlock Grove”). Besides, given the appetite for the genre, a program that’s simply unapologetic fun, as this is, can be plenty good, “Penny”-wise.

Вот так в сезоне у нас и появился восхитительный протагонист в исполнении великолепной Хелен МакКрори — Эвелин Пул, с которой мы уже встречались в первом сезоне. А в этом сезоне она станет жестоким и беспощадным врагом Ванессы.
Вы всегда намеревались сделать персонаж Эвелин более значимым со временем?
О, да, это всегда было моим намерением. Впервые мы поговорили с Хелен о ее роли в сериале еще 2 года назад, мы ведь работали вместе над Коррдинатами Скайфолл и Хранителем Времени. Я был большим поклонником ее творчества, и на сцене и на экране. И я сказал: «А теперь ты должна поверить мне. В первом сезоне у тебя будет всего пара сцен, но уже во втором будет огромный прорыв». То, что в первом сезоне наши герои – сэр Малкольм, Ванесса и Итан — будут охотниками, мне было известно всегда. Они будут пытаться найти Мину и победить вампиров. Но во втором сезоне охотиться уже будут на них. Мы познакомимся с другими ведьмами, и их отношениями с Эвелин?
Да, потому что они – это ее ковен, и они идут рука об руку уже много лет. Мы узнаем, почему они вместе и чего ищут. Поиск путей, как именно показать наших ведьм, стал настоящим вызовом для наших художников-постановщиков, да и вообще для всех занятых в работе над сериалом отделов. Мы не хотели типичных островерхих черных шляп и мантий. Мы попытались найти особую версию ведьм Penny Dreadful, с одной стороны очень привлекательных, а с другой — ужасных – хотя, как все остальные наши герои.

И как только они сделают свой выбор, они тут же перестанут быть интересны, и эта история уже будет не о них.
Что вы можете рассказать нам об Итане и его попытках понять, что он такое?
Он всегда знал, что его окружает темнота, что он способен на насилие и жестокость, но он не мог этого объяснить. В этом сезоне он назовет все вещи своими именами. И он вынужден будет бороться с этим, а это довольно изнурительно. Это откровение и то давление, которое испытывает Ванесса, сблизит их. Они всегда были на орбите друг у друга, и сверхъестественно, и романтически, а еще эротически и интеллектуально – и в этом сезоне они станут ближе друг к другу, потому что они оба ведут эту борьбу.
В конце первого сезона мы поняли, что у Виктора Франкенштейна далеко идущие планы в отношении новопрествленной Броны. Что у него в запасе?
Одной из замечательных сюжетных линий этого сезона стала история о том, как доктор Франкенштейн воскрешает женщину. Ведь мы знаем, что он добился успеха с Созданием и Протеем – и он совершенствует этот процесс. Да, он вернет Брону к жизни, но ему придется обучать жизни именно женщину, а мы знаем его романтические наклонности, а еще, Создание не спускает с него глаз. В общем, образуется такой довольно странный любовный треугольник.
Создание — это тот персонаж, к которому я постепенно проникаюсь симпатией, но первое, что мы от него увидели – это акт насилия. Получается, он тоже очень сложный персонаж.
Все наши герои имеют свои литературные истоки. И мне кажется, что наше создание очень близко к тому, каким его описала Мэри Шелли. Когда я читал Франкенштейна, я очень сопереживал Созданию — но я был потрясен его жестокостью. Но я его понимаю. Никто из персонажей сериала не трогает меня так сильно, как Создание, потому что все, чего он хочет, это простых человеческих отношений. Он хочет быть частью общества. Хочет любви. Но мир не принимает его. И да, он способен на невероятную жесткость, но я объясняю это его глубокой болью. Он просто мстит, я думаю.
И в дополнение у нас есть Дориан (Грей), который вроде бы и принадлежит этому миру но за некоторыми исключениями. Что ждет его в новом сезоне?

Я хочу отметить, что мы все, кто работал над вторым сезоном, мы уже хорошо знали друг друга Мы втянулись в ритм сериала, трудились в свое удовольствие, потому что в первом сезоне мы еще только притирались и присматривались друг к другу. И актеры раскрылись по-другому, стали более смелыми, готовы отправиться за своими героями в разные места. И вам очень понравится за всем этим наблюдать.

Fangs a Lot: Penny Dreadful Werewolf Josh Hartnett Talks Sex, Romance, and Full Moons
The Victorian-era horror saga Penny Dreadful ended with a megashock last season when it was revealed that Wild West sharpshooter Ethan Chandler—played by Josh Hartnett—can sprout fur and killer fangs. Yep, he's an American werewolf in London! Season 2 of the Showtime series kicks off Sunday, May 3 (10/9c) and Hartnett gave us a preview of the howling good time to come.
How was it keeping Ethan's werewolf identity under wraps?
Terrible! I am so grateful I don't have to hide anymore. My friends would watch Penny Dreadful and go, "So what's Ethan's big secret? Everyone on the show has one." The more I tried to skirt the subject, the more people tried to guess and, some of them were right. We even had to keep it a secret at the set. On the actor call sheet, the werewolf's name was Brian.
How will Ethan deal with his wolfiness in Season 2?
Very carefully. All the people in his little group–Sir Malcolm [Timothy Dalton], Vanessa Ives [Eva Green], Dr. Frankenstein [Harry Treadaway]–are haunted by demons, but Ethan is a demon. And when he turns into that vicious beast, he doesn't care who he kills, so he's a danger to everyone. [Laughs] He really has to keep track of those full moons!
We know he was the victim of an abusive father back in the U.S. Will more of that story come to light?
It's a slow burn. There was definitely emotional abuse and a lot of damage there. Hang with Ethan for a few minutes and you can see that. It's unusual for a man of his time to be so open and vulnerable, to be haunted in such an huge way, but it has made him a man who is much more sensitive than most. I love that duality about him—his freaky werewolf side and the incredible empathy he feels for others.
Do we find out how he became a werewolf?
We find out if Ethan was born this way or was bitten, but you'll learn much more about his future than his past. He's got even greater secrets than being a werewolf.
Like when he suddenly went bi last season and got it on with Dorian Gray [Reeve Carney]? Was that just one night of lust, or will there be more?
Dorian and Ethan definitely had something going there, and it does need to be dealt with at some point, but Dorian is supernatural in his attractiveness and can have anyone he likes. Why would he continue to woo Ethan? I do know one thing for sure: The crowd at Comic-Con loved it!
Did you?
Oh, I liked playing it a lot. I like that the sexuality on our show is so fluid. People were not expecting a supposedly straight guy to get together with another guy and it threw some folks for a loop. There were a lot of questions asked [by viewers] about Ethan's sexuality that I don't think necessarily pertained. People feel the need to call it something. Sex is a very complex thing and the way people are so quick to label things they don't understand can be very detrimental to the people who are labeled.
What about Ethan and Vanessa? The show's creator, John Logan, has said that their "intimacy grows as they are forced to confront their demons together." What does that mean exactly, lots of hot sex?
Is that what "intimacy" means to you?
Well, on this show, it sure as hell doesn't mean tea parties.
It means that Ethan and Vanessa are going to be spending lots more time together and that their fates are much more intertwined than in Season 1.
And…?
They do become closer.
How close?

Penny Dreadful season 2: Billie Piper on playing the Bride of Frankenstein and how her prosthetic body-double kept her up at night
'Game of Thrones' doesn't own the monopoly on lusciously realised immersive universes, and while the mythical Westeros has been largely created on-set and outdoors in Northern Ireland, south of the border the late Victorian world of Sky Atlantic's Penny Dreadful is based at Ardmore Studios in County Wicklow. Once home to The Tudors it is now dominated by John Logan's grand guignol mash-up of Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker and, er, Oscar Wilde.
When we left Penny Dreadful, African explorer Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) had sacrificed his kidnapped daughter Mina for his witchy sidekick Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), who had in turn rejected the romantic advances of Dorian Gray (very wise – he's much older than he looks); wild-west showman Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) had turned into a werewolf and killed the Pinkerton detectives pursuing him; Frankenstein's monster (Rory Kinnear) was still have trouble finding a woman who could see past his looks and Irish prostitute Brona (Billie Piper) had succumbed to her TB – oh, and a spot of suffocation from Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway). As season two begins, he is busy resurrecting Brona as a mate for his lonely creation.
And here is Billie Piper, fresh from shooting a scene that I was not allowed to watch because it contained a major spoiler. Suffice to say she is wearing what looks suspiciously like a wedding dress. "Dying of consumption and then coming back as the Bride of Frankenstein… that had massive appeal to me," says Piper, casting looks at the producer, since she is unsure what she can say about the new season. "It's such a minefield. Er, scratch head...
"Actually, I'm pretty good. I'm not a great sharer, I think we've all kept pretty tight-lipped about it, we've kind of had to. It's frightening that level of responsibility, you don't want to be the one who's fired." Hadn't her years as Rose Tyler on Doctor Who taught her the way around confidentiality clauses? "Exactly. I'm pretty well versed in hiding things."
In Mary Shelley's novel Victor Frankenstein creates a mate for his monster, but destroys it for fear of creating a family of little monsters. But the character of Elizabeth was immortalised by Elsa Lanchester in James Whale's 1935 classic, The Bride of Frankenstein, emitting an unforgettable yelp when she first claps eyes on her bolt-necked groom. Piper says she has read the book but has not seen the movie. "So we could go at it fresh and free from that," she says.
In the film, Elizabeth finds the monster repulsive. Will her Bride be more loving? "It's a perverse relationship I'd say, it moves around a bit. There's a lot of feeling, but she also has a quest and she wants him on board. So she goes about that using her great tools of manipulation but whether it's formed through genuine love I suppose you'll have to wait and see."

Penny Dreadful renewed for second season
Before Brona becomes the bride, Victor needs to work his alchemy – scenes which required a prosthetic body-double, painstakingly cast from Piper's own body – and which I am introduced to in the workshop overseen by Nick Dudman, who worked his prosthetic magic on all the Harry Potter films and is responsible for moulding Benedict Cumberbatch's hump in the upcoming BBC adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard III. What was it like meeting her body body-double?
"That was weird," Piper admits. "That kind of had you thinking at night, 'where is it? Who's with it? Is it all locked up?' Seeing yourself that way is bizarre – not something you want to fixate on." The stuff of nightmares? "I kind of sleep like I'm dead, so no."
Rory Kinnear has had an even more radical makeover as the monster, or Caliban as he's known in Penny Dreadful, and now looks even more like Marilyn Manson than before. "One of the influences I'm sure," says Kinnear.
"The first day when we were trying on looks that was nine hours, and the next day was eight hours, so I thought 'I'm signed up for six series'... But now we're down to three and a half. The first time I Skyped my son was interesting because I hadn't told him about it, and a four-year-old responding to his father looking like that..."
The monster's is searching for acceptance – or humanity. "He [Caliban] is constantly trying to find the human connection, despite his monstrousness and his external appearance," says Kinnear.
The monster isn't the only character looking for love in season two, and Sir Malcolm Murray's choice of sweetheart turns out to be equally questionable: Evelyn Poole (played by Helen McCrory) – aka spiritualist Madame Kali – who has been promoted to chief baddie for the new episodes.
"He's feeling vulnerable... she's consolation for him – a terrible choice," says Timothy Dalton, who is heavy with cold and in a philosophical mood after six months of filming in Ireland (his home is in Los Angeles). "My first movie ever was made in this studio," says the former Bond star, looking about him. "A Lion in Winter with Peter O'Toole and Katharine Hepburn."
What, apart from the obvious benefits of plentiful, well-paid work, attracted him to such a time-consuming project? "I remember the old Hammer horror films that weren't horrifying, and I don't understand the term horror and don't like the fact that people call our show horror," he answers discursively.
"What I love about this is it's a big, gaudy, lurid sort of wrapper in which those forever questions of evil and love and what it is to be a human being are done, within that wrapper, in quite a serious way."
John Logan, who wrote the Bond movie Skyfall, and is a co-writer on the upcoming 007 adventure, Spectre (not to mention Gladiator and the screenplays for Martin Scorsese's Hugo and The Aviator), agrees with Dalton about the ambition of Penny Dreadful.
"The reason I wrote it wasn't because I wanted to write a horror show about vampires it was because I wanted to write a Charles Dickens novel – something that just kept going and going in instalments," he says. "As much as I love James Whale and Hammer films, I pushed those aside. I went back to Mary Shelley and Oscar Wilde. This Frankenstein, is he my creation? Yes partly. Is he Mary Shelley's? Yes, completely."
New characters are played by Douglas Hodge, David Haig and Sarah Greene, while the roles played by Helen McCrory and Simon Russell Beale have been exponentially beefed up.
"I'm very honoured to be part of the gang, I know I'm the newest member. Dear old Ferdinand, I'm very fond of him," says Russell Beale himself, who adds, perhaps speaking for the casual viewer. "But I'm still slightly confused by the plot."
Season two of Penny Dreadful begins on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday 5 May at 10pm

Showtime’s acclaimed series Penny Dreadful is back for a second season, premiering this Sunday on Showtime. (Not on the bandwagon yet? You could easily binge-watch the first season to catch-up before the premiere; it’s only eight episodes.)
A monster mash-up of the best kind, the show brings together supernatural characters from Victorian genre literature in a grand spectacle that’s both artsy and campy – and all at once grossly entertaining.
This season, series stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton are fighting a fierce new evil force in Helen McCrory that is sure to make Season 2 a bloody good time.
While the Penny Dreadful cast was promoting the show in Los Angeles, Bio got to spend some time with leading man Josh Hartnett, as he gave reporters some tidbits on what’s ahead for his character this season.
For those who need a quick refresher: In the first season finale, the secret identity of American gunslinger Ethan Chandler was revealed: He’s a werewolf!
“We had to hold so much back in the first season, we didn’t want to give too much away about Ethan until the end, so this second season, I really get to blossom and have a lot of fun,” Hartnett told us.
“This season, Ethan discovers who he is and what he’s about, so he changes dramatically,” Hartnett explained. “He didn’t know what he was [last season]… he just knew he’d wake up and there’d be blood. A murder had occurred — most likely at his hands — and he’s been running from that for a long time.”
In discovering who he is, there’s “a sense of relief” for Ethan, Hartnett says, “and anger.” It will be a prickly process: “He’ll go through the stages of grief, finding out that he’s something he can’t control.”
As if having a monster identity crisis weren’t enough to deal with, Ethan is also being hunted by a dogged Scotland Yard inspector (a new character played by Doug Hodge).
“It’s not an easy season for Ethan,” Hartnett added.
Will there be any bright spots? How about on the love front?
“My relationship with Vanessa [Eva Green] has grown quite a bit,” he teased, but he opted not to elaborate.
Here are 5 Things to Know About the New Season of Penny Dreadful:
1. Say Hello to Witches…and a Wildly Wicked New Villain:
“This season, we embrace witchcraft,” says series creator John Logan. “The character Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali, the spiritualist introduced at the séance in Season 1) becomes the antagonist for not only Vanessa but all the characters” and “poses a unique threat.”
“With Evelyn Poole (played by Helen McCrory), this season [we have] an actual antagonist who can speak… now we have a proper villain, and we enjoy her immensely,” Logan teased.
2. Ethan and Vanessa Get Cozy:
“Last season, our heroes were hunters. This season, they are the hunted. They are the prey,” Logan explained.
“And Ethan has drawn closer to Vanessa in every conceivable way this season due to the pressure on them,” he added.
P.S. Be on the lookout for Patti LuPone, who guest stars this season as “a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past.”
3. Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) Faces Evil Temptation:
“Sir Malcolm is drawn into a relationship with Evelyn Poole that alienates him, romantically, personally, and supernaturally, from the rest of the people in the series,” Logan says.
4. Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) Creates a New “Monster”:
In creating a playmate to keep the tragically lonely Creature (Rory Kinnear) company, “Dr. Frankenstein is grappling with a new life form which is a woman — the woman he killed, Ethan’s ex-flame Brona Croft (Billie Piper) — and has to deal with what those emotions and feelings are,” Logan says. Translation: One monstrous love triangle.
5. And What About Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney)…?:
One of the more shocking (and sexy) scenes of Season 1 was the unexpected make-out session between the immortal Dorian Gray and the hunky gunslinger, both of whom have a connection to Vanessa. When reporters asked Logan if that plot point will be revisited in Season 2, he smiled and simply said, “Perhaps.”
Penny Dreadful airs Sundays at 10/9c on Showtime, beginning May 3.

«Ужасы по дешевке»: пять причин, по которым стоит смотреть сериал Penny Dreadful
Боитесь ли вы темноты? Вздрагиваете ли от непонятного шороха ночью или от невесть откуда взявшейся тени днем? Наверное, да. Верите ли вы в чудовищ? Скорее всего, нет. Но в телесериале «Penny Dreadful» («Ужасы по дешевке», «Бульварные ужасы», «Страшные Сказки»), который 4 мая вернется на наши экраны со вторым сезоном, сплелись воедино классические истории-страшилки, которые, хоть и не заставят вас поверить в существование монстров, но определенно пощекочут нервы.
Идея собрать под дырявой крышей викторианского Лондона его самых известных готических персонажей принадлежит трехкратному номинанту на Оскар, драматургу Джону Логану. По его собственному признанию, с идеей проекта он жил 10 лет, пока, наконец, она не обрела очертания телеcериала и не прописалась на премиальном кабельном канале Showtime под названием «Penny Dreadful». Мои заметки не претендуют называться полноценной рецензией – я обычный зритель, которому хочется высказать свое мнение. Позвольте же мне это сделать, и буду благодарна за поддержку.
Итак, почему же этот сериал достоин вашего внимания?

При просмотре я физически ощущала вонь сточных канав трущоб, по которым бродят наши герои, восхитилась аскетизмом особняка сэра Малкольма, поразилась убогости квартиры Франкенштейна и увлеклась роскошью обители Дориана Грея. Но нужно отметить, что все эти сцены снимали на одной-единственной улочке Дублина, и в павильонах студии Ardmore. Так же замечу, что работа художников-постановщиков во главе с Джонатаном МакКинстри не осталась без внимания – они получили заслуженную премию Британской Академии телевидения BAFTA 2015.
В-третьих, монстры в сериале. Они действительно страшные! Их нельзя просто так описать, их нужно увидеть! К слову, на полный грим Создания Франкенштейна (Рори Киннер) уходило 8 часов в день. Столько же времени приходилось гримировать Вампира. И труд мастеров специального грима тоже отмечен BAFTA 2015.
Сюжет сериала на первый взгляд, прост и незамысловат. В Лондоне, в 1891 г, благородный джентльмен сэр Малкольм Мюррей ищет пропавшую дочь с помощью ее подруги детства Ванессы Айвз. К своим поискам они привлекают бродячего циркача-стрелка Итана Чендлера, а позже, столкнувшись с чем-то необъяснимым, вынуждены прибегнуть к помощи доктора Виктора Франкенштейна — анатома с душой поэта. Еще среди действующих лиц чахоточная ирландская эмигрантка Брона Крофт — девица легкого поведения и томный скучающий юноша Дориан Грей, скрывающий в тайной комнате свой портрет и стремящийся каждый день узнавать что-то новое и удивительное. Ах, да! Еще у нас есть Создание Франкенштейна, вампиры и медиумы, древнеегипетские боги и оборотни, и, конечно же, одержимость дьяволом и экзорцизм! Полна коробочка!
Нельзя не влюбиться в великолепный саунтдрек к сериалу, написанный польским композитором Абелем Коженевски и тоже отмеченный наградой BAFTA 2015.
Перечислять достоинства сериала и цитировать восхитительные диалоги и монологи его героев можно очень долго, лучше просто пролистайте страницы нашего мини-сайта и сами почитайте и посмотрите все, что мы трепетно собирали на протяжении целого года его существования. Замечу еще, что каналу Showtime прекрасно известно о нашем сайте, им очень нравится все, что мы делаем, и наше общение с ними во втором сезоне обещает стать еще более продуктивным и интересным, а особенно для фанатов сериала из числа наших читателей!
Я очень жду продолжения сериала. Второй сезон стартует в понедельник, 4 мая, и будет состоять уже из 10 серий. Главные герои из охотников превратились в добычу. И эти новые обстоятельства откроют их нам с совершенно другой стороны.
А еще отмечу главную, на мой взгляд, причину, по которой следует посмотреть «Penny Dreadful». Основная идея сериала, как неоднократно говорили его создатели, не в том, чтоб напугать своего зрителя, а в том, чтобы взволновать. Показать, что страшны не сверхъестественные чудовища, живущие под кроватью, и от которых легко спрятаться под одеялом. А страшны наши обыденные, повседневные мысли. Наши тайные, подавленные желания, наши, используя терминологию еще одного культового сериала от Showtime «темные попутчики». И не важно, что ты скрываешь, от чего пытаешься убежать, и какие грязные фантазии роятся у тебя в голове — все остальные точно такие же, как и ты!
За внешней оболочкой, за смесью кровавых ужасов из дешевых водевилей забытой эпохи скрываются очень серьезные вещи. Извечная борьба добра и зла, вопрос, насколько далеко мы способны дойти в потворстве своим целям и желаниям. И, конечно же, что это значит — быть человеком?
В общем, помните, как в детстве? «В черной-черной комнате… черный-черный шкаф (сундук)… много еще чего, а в конце: « Отдай свое сердце!» Мое сердце отдано сериалу «Ужасы по дешевке», и я приглашаю вас вместе с собой открыть этот ужасно прекрасный и таинственный мир Penny Dreadful. Добро пожаловать!

После долгого перерыва тяжело оформлять свои мысли в некую осязаемую оболочку. Но я постараюсь.
Итак, мы снова встретились с нашими старыми знакомыми – обитателями викторианского Лондона и таинственного Полусвета. Мы снова в мире Penny Dreadful.
Приятно погожим зимним днем прогуляться по свежевыпавшему пушистому снегу в парке. Но только до той поры, пока неведомая темная сила не свалит тебя с ног. Какая милая улыбка играла на губах Ванессы до тех пор, пока заклинание Мадам Кали не нарушило ее покой. Мадам просто развлекалась и разминалась, настоящее действие еще впереди и оно, это действие, не заставило себя долго ждать! Короткий зимний день сменился раними сумерками, и на волю вырвалось новое нечто. Ведьмы! (В скобках замечу, отдаленно смахивающие на вампиров из первого сезона). Мерзкие, голые, изуродованные шрамами и клеймами, злобные, шипящие и извивающиеся. Ведьмы в этой серии показали нам многое, но конечно же, далеко не все из того, на что способны. Целью ведьм было схватить Ванессу и доставить пред очи все той же Мадам Кали, или, если угодно, Эвелин Пул. Но план не удался. У Ванессы появился защитник.
Итан Чендлер. Lupus Dei. Человек-Волк. В финальной серии первого сезона наконец-то показалось звериное обличье Итана, он был загнан в угол детективами, нанятыми его отцом в Америке, и, защищая свою жизнь, растерзал кучу народа в баре. Как здорово была сыграна сцена пробуждения Итана! Ни единого слова, только ужас, отвращение и боль на лице Джоша Хартнетта. Сомнения Итана рассеяны – раньше он только подозревал, что способен на зверства, а теперь убедился в этом воочию. Чендлер решает уехать из Лондона, но ведьминская атака спутала ему все планы. Да, он остался защищать мисс Айвз. Но теперь он и сам под ударом. Причем, бояться ему нужно не только ведьм, но и нового инспектора и одного из выживших при его нападении детективов! Похоже, Итан в этом сезоне будет нарасхват!
Пока Ванесса и Итан отбивались от ведьм, доктор Франкенштейн под присмотром своего Создания колдовал над трупом Броны. И вот, все необходимые манипуляции сделаны, и «зародыш» невесты погружается в лохань с неизвестной жидкостью. С тех пор, как первая дохлая лягушка задергала лапкой под воздействием тока, человечество не перестает верить в животворящую силу электричества. Доктор Франкенштейн, без сомнения, преуспел в этих опытах. Я восхищаюсь Виктором, его холодным умом, его гением. В лаборатории Доктора каждый винтик, каждая труба или проводок выглядят так научно, что поневоле руки чешутся воспроизвести его исследования! Но Виктор и единственный из героев сериала, кто по-настоящему меня пугает. Шокирующая сцена, когда доктор, разговаривая с Броной, вдруг начал ее поглаживать. Хотя, если разобраться, то очень характерная для Франкенштейна. С тех пор, как он погрузил ее в свой питательный раствор, она стала для него очередным ребенком, она для него – жива! И как будущая мать поглаживает свое чрево, так и доктор пытался приободрить свое детище. А потом в какой-то момент разыгрались гормоны… В общем, Сембене появился как раз вовремя.
Что ж, Брона ожила. С помощью грозы и молитв Калибана, и конечно же, гения Франкенштейна. И теперь нам остается только надеяться, что она не будет помнить ничего из свой прежней жизни. Ни тем, чем зарабатывала на жизнь, ни тяжелой работы, ни насильственной смерти, ни даже Итана. С днем рождения, новое Создание Франкенштейна! Какая же вечность тебе уготована? Как тебя назовут, кто будет покупать тебе одежду и обучать всяким женским мелочам, к примеру, как причесаться и уложить волосы, или как надеть корсет? Готов ли Виктор к такому? Мне кажется, совершенно не готов. Но наблюдать за семейством Франкенштейн становится все интереснее!
Вот зачем, спрашивается, первому Созданию Франкенштейна нужна работа? Он может обходиться без еды и питья, он не чувствует холода, значит, у него нет острой необходимости в крыше над головой. Конечно же, Создание всеми силами пытается стать просто человеком, влиться в социум. И пусть на него будет орать новый работодатель, он стерпит все, лишь бы быть таким же, как и все. Создание таки нашел работу – его взяли помощником в музей восковых фигур. Но вот не доверяю я этому напускному радушию хозяина музея! Как бы он не нацелился сделать из несчастного кадавра очередной экспонат! Чем не портрет «старины Джека»? Или и того лучше — чудовища, ответственного за резню в моряцком трактире?
Сэр Малкольм наконец похоронил Мину. Он опустошен. Судьба жестоко наказала его за эгоизм, за то, что регулярно оставлял семью, пытаясь отыскать полумифический исток Нила. Сейчас он вернулся к своим истокам, в родовое поместье, но ему там нет места. Жена, обожавшая его в молодости, наконец-то очнулась и высказала мужу все в лицо: «У нас больше нет детей, чтобы их защищать!». Неудивительно, что после такой горькой пилюли сэр Малкольм угодит прямиком в лапы Мадам Кали, или, точнее, в холеные ручки Эвелин Пул.
Эвелин Пул поразила, ужаснула и насмешила. Браво, Хелен МакКрори! От замогильной баллады леденеет кровь, и хотя эта песня неоднократно уже звучала в сериале, только сейчас, в исполнении Мадам Кали, мы ее отметили. Труп девушки на каменном полу, и эффектно потушенная в крови папироска. Казалось бы, неужели может быть еще что-то, способное нас поразить? Да, может! Монолог Эвелин. Memento mori. Комичная мимика, взмах руки, и провинившаяся ведьмочка падает замертво. Сколько же подручных у мисс Пул? Если каждая провинность карается смертью, то их ряды должны регулярно редеть и пополняться. Надеюсь, уже скоро мы все это узнаем. Хотя, наверное, эта оплошность ведьмы действительно должна караться смертью, ведь Эвелин нужна Ванесса. Она хочет отдать ее Хозяину – Люциферу! Вот тут возникает вопрос. Тот ли самый это Хозяин, что так часто упоминался в первом сезоне? Хозяин вампиров? Но определенно, это именно он донимал Ванессу и в теле Итана грозился сделать ее матерью Зла.
Но этот факт опять ставит в центр всего повествования Ванессу и ее проблемы, которые окружающие будут решать даже во вред себе и наперекор ее желаниям. То есть, у нас опять повторение основной интриги первого сезона. Скажу честно, меня это огорчает. Веет от этого некоей вторичностью. Сериал повторяет сам себя. Надеюсь, это все-таки первое впечатление и ничего подобного не случится.
Порадовали новички сериала — Сара Грин, исполняющая роль дочери Эвелин, Гекаты и Дуглас Ходж, он же инспектор Скотланд Ярда Руск.
Хочется еще особо отметить режиссерскую работу и работу мастеров визуальных эффектов. Виды викторианского Лондона просто завораживают, а превращение голых бестий в добропорядочных горожанок пробирает до дрожи. Определенно, повествование вышло на новый уровень, а замечательные диалоги остались. И почему лучшие фразы всегда достаются Калибану? «Что есть доктор Франкенштейн без своего Создания?» Кто есть все мы без своих грехов и пристрастий? Так, телесная оболочка. Может, этим и обусловлен внешний вид ведьм? Снимите с любого из нас нашу благопристойность, ту, что необходима для внешнего мира, и что от нас останется?
Итак, двери в Демимонд снова открыты! Нас опять будут пугать, намекать, восхищать и заставлять задумываться. С возвращением Penny Dreadful! Мы соскучились!

'Penny Dreadful' Season 2 Spoilers: Josh Hartnett Says 'Ethan Will Face Demons' This Season
"Penny Dreadful" season two is off to a terrifying start with Vanessa finding herself haunted by witches who want her soul.

But it looks like Vanessa Ives (played by Eva Green) will not be the only one facing demons this season.
In a recent interview with USA Today, actor Josh Hartnett talked about his character Ethan Chandler. Specifically, Hartnett explained that fans will get a deeper sense of not only who Ethan is as a person, but also the troubles he can no longer run from.
"This season we start to get to know a little bit about him. What you see is nothing of what you get," explained Hartnett.
Hartnett was unable to say much about what will happen to Ethan now that his werewolf side has gotten out of control. He did mention however, that he can no longer run away from his demons - whether those demons are his own or Vanessa's.
"You can't outrun your demons and Ethan is gonna start facing the main one. He would have loved to have fled but this is his special connection to Vanessa and he can't leave her alone. He can't leave her alone in this mess," Hartnett said.
The "Penny Dreadful" season two premiere focused mostly on Vanessa and the witches, but there was also a scene in which it would appear that the police are slowly making progress in discovering his murderous tendency.
If you need a little more evidence that things will be heating up for Ethan Chandler in the new season, Hartnett also mentioned in an earlier featurette that the werewolf inside is beginning to get out of control.
"He has more knowledge of what he is. He knows he has this time to try and figure out a way to not kill a bunch of people he loves," he expressed.
