***Это ведь он тогда Колина заметил в "Донмаре"!!!*** А что конкретно сказано, что "The event will raise cash for Old Vic New Voices, which works with young people to develop talent and build audiences" - деньги от проведения 24-часового марафона пойдут на проект Old Vic New Voices ("Новые голоса Old Vic"), который существует для того, чтобы молодые люди могли развивать талант и выступать на публике...

Old Vic

Hartnett is main man in Old Vic's 24 Hour Plays

JOSH Hartnett, Martin Freeman, Dervla Kirwan and Jessica Hynes are four of the stars who will take part in this year's 24 Hour Plays Celebrity Gala at the Old Vic.

The now annual fundraiser involves actors, writers and directors joining forces to create and present a series of six plays all within a day. This year the event, on 30 November, will be hosted by James Corden and Johnny Vaughan.

The night finishes with The 25th Hour, a post-show party with the stars at Plaza on the River, which supporters with the more expensive tickets can attend.

Previous 24 Hour participants have spoken of the risky nature of the venture. But it has not deterred willing participants. This year Jenny Agutter, Hugh Bonneville, Julia Davis, David Harewood, Sally Phillips, Tim Pigott-Smith, Michelle Ryan and Lia Williams are signed up. Hartnett is currently in Rain Man at the Apollo Theatre.

Kevin Spacey, artistic director of the Old Vic, said: "The 24 Hour Plays is a quite brilliant, exhilarating event for everyone concerned. We're delighted such a terrific cast of actors is already on board and Johnny and James have agreed to hold it all together as hosts.

"This is adrenaline-fuelled theatre and the audience is in for a real treat."

Joining the fun will be writers Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, the partnership behind TV comedy hits such as The New Statesman and Birds Of A Feather. Amelia Bullmore currently on stage at the Old Vic in The Norman Conquests, is taking part as a playwright.

Directors signed up to bring order to the mayhem include Anna Mackmin, Jonathan Munby and Bush Theatre artistic director Josie Rourke.

The event will raise cash for Old Vic New Voices, which works with young people to develop talent and build audiences. Ryan, currently in Merlin on BBC1 but best known for EastEnders, said she had wanted to take part as soon as she saw The Norman Conquests at the theatre: "It's such a dynamic incredible production. Then I remembered the 24 Hour Plays and was thinking that would be an exciting challenge.

"We will be completely exposed but in a really good way. I think it will be exhilarating, and it's about giving something back to the community." Tickets are Ј250 with pre-show drinks and post-show party; Ј125 with post-show party; or Ј75. The Old Vic has no public subsidy.

Old Vic 24 Hour & Court Wig Out!
Date: 1 December 2008

The Old Vic played host to its fifth annual 24-hour play festival over the weekend, featuring a stellar line-up of performers including Josh Harnett, Sally Phillips, Hugh Bonneville and Martin Freeman. The event sees actors, writers and directors join forces to create a series of six plays to raise funds for the venue’s Old Vic New Voices department (See News, 13 November 2008).

Other actors participating in this year’s event included Henry Goodman, Jenny Agutter, Hamish Clark, Julia Davis, David Harewood, Jessica Hynes, Jenny Jules, Dervla Kirwan, Martina Laird, Sally Phillips, Tim Pigott-Smith and Lia Williams, who joined forces with directors Tamara Harvey, Clare Lizzimore, Anna Mackmin, Jonathan Munby and Josie Rourke, and writers Amelia Bullmore, Moira Buffini, Maurice Gran and Laurence Marks.
Our Whatsonstage.com photographer Dan Wooller was on hand for the now-customary ‘25th Hour’ party at Party on the Plaza, where the companies celebrated alongside Old Vic director Kevin Spacey and guests including artist Tracey Emin and actors Jason Isaacs, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ralf Little and Mark Gatiss.

The event was co-hosted by radio DJ and TV presenter Johnnie Vaughan and James Corden, the original History Boy and creator of TV’s Gavin and Stacey, who also presented the 2008 Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Awards Show at which he famously snogged Best Newcomer winner Daniel Radcliffe (See WOS TV, 28 Feb 2008).

Ruby by Tanita Gupta

Ruby - Jenny Jules
Arun - Sanjeev Bhaskar
Jack - Josh Hartnett
Sam - Jason Isaacs

Directed by Tamara Harvey (AD was Rachel Briscoe)

I have seen Tanita's work as readings through Tamara's company and this seemed a little familiar. We are in a speed dating venue where Ruby fabricates three very different personalities to accommodate our three very different men. Fairly amusing interjections here.

Spacey and Josh are the hot tickets
Kevin Spacey gave another demonstration of why he deserved his special award "for bringing new life to the Old Vic" at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards last month.

The artistic director pulled in a bevy of stars, including Hollywood heartthrob Josh Hartnett (right), for the annual 24 Hour Plays Celebrity Gala which raises funds for the Old Vic New Voices programme.
Well-known performers, directors and writers are asked to create a series of six plays off the hoof. Hosted by Jonny Vaughan and James Corden, the thespians acting their socks off this year included (left to right)Jason Isaacs, Bionic Woman Michelle Ryan and Ralf Little.

Kevin Spacey's new Old Vic
Kevin Spacey’s artistic directorship at the Old Vic has come under quite unparalleled levels of scrutiny since the actor jetted in from the US and set up shop in Southwark in 2003.

At first, the decision was treated with almost Beatles-like levels of hysteria. People could scarcely believe that a bona fide movie star had decided to come to try to secure the future of one of London’s most historic and beloved venues. This soon turned to suspicion - why would a bone fide movie star want to come and secure the future of one of London’s most historic and beloved venues? And then to outright opposition, as various critics and commentators started to call for Spacey’s head when the artistic programme suffered a run of duds.

Now, it’s all change again.

Last month, Spacey picked up a special prize at the Evening Standard Awards in recognition of the artistic turn-around at the venue.

And there has certainly been a solid (although not spectacular) run of hits over the last year or so. The Norman Conquests - and the overhaul of the Old Vic to create a theatre-in-the-round - has been a resounding success. Last season’s The Entertainer and the earlier A Moon for the Misbegotten were undoubted hits and, looking forward, The Bridge Project , is a mouth-watering prospect.

Perhaps, though, Spacey’s greatest achievement since he took over the Old Vic has nothing to do with any of this.
Attending last night’s 24 Hour Plays Celebrity Gala, it struck me how remarkable it is that an unfunded theatre (yes, the Old Vic receives not a penny in government funding) is able to run an education and outreach programme that is more extensive than those in most subsidised theatres.

The figures are striking. Over the last five years, 25,000 people have been involved in the Old Vic’s ‘creative learning initiatives’, while 35,000 have taken advantage of their cut price ticket scheme for under 25s.

Meanwhile, its work in fostering new playwrights, directors and performers through the Old Vic New Voices programme is equally impressive. If any endorsement were needed of the scheme, it is that last night’s gala - a line up of established names within the industry - boasted two graduates of the initiative. Which, bearing in mind it is now only in its fifth year, is pretty impressive.

It’s also impressive to see Spacey putting his money where his mouth is (so to speak) and programming a brand new play - Complicit - as his opener for 2009. After all, it’s all very well and good training up new playwrights, but if they haven’t got anywhere willing to take a punt on brand-new material, then what’s the point?

In fact, last night’s gala really brought home the over-riding importance of the playwright.

The six productions (all written, rehearsed and performed within 24 hours) were - as you’d expect - of varying quality. However, what was very clear was that if the writer hadn’t done his/her job then there was absolutely nothing the directors or cast could do to save the mini-play.

Ultimately, the most successful of the 10-minute long productions were the ones which had a confident structure and form imposed on them by the playwright. In others, where the writer had lost their way somewhat, there was little that the cast could do to redeem them. Ultimately, the writing was absolutely paramount to the success of each individual play.

Which is why schemes such as those run by the Old Vic are so important. And - when commentators are consistently complaining about the dearth of new writing in the commercial London theatre - Spacey’s Old Vic should be congratulated for trying to push on a new generation of talent.
