In showbiz, lineage really matters, but actor Alice Englert has successfully managed to move out of her parents' shadow, both illustrious film-makers.

Born in New Zealand to a celebrity couple, Oscar-winning director Jane Campion and film-maker Colin Englert, the 17-year-old actor can already boast a life marked by various achievements. Alice is playing the character of a Brit girl, Dolly, in director Roland Joffé's " Singularity", which is being shot at various locations across India. She also a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and
poetess — all rolled into one.

Exploring India
Alice suffered a heatstroke during the shoot of the film and was hospitalized for two days. "I am fine now. I spent a whole month shooting in extreme heat. But I think wearing those heavy costumes under the hot sun for a whole month has made me much stronger. Now, I can live and survive in the heat of India," said Alice. Talking about her experience in India, she added, "It was a fun experience to shoot here, exploring the heritage that the country stands for. Orchha (Madhya Pradesh) has so many temples. Once after the shooting, we went to a Ram temple where I got to watch a staging of a few acts from the Ramayana."

Her role in the film "Singularity", she said, "is that of a teenage daughter of a British colonel who died while fighting the Indian soldiers, but his daughter manages to escape."

Bipasha to her rescue
Alice recalled how while shooting for a scene in Orchha, she was besieged by a huge crowd and was rescued by actor Bipasha Basu in true filmi style. Appreciating her, Alice said, "On that day, while shooting, I found myself surrounded by a huge crowd and did not know what to do. Suddenly, Bipasha appeared and rushed me to her car." The actor is also all praise for Bipasha. "Bipasha is a nice person. I enjoyed working with her. She's got a perfect body," she said.

'Singularity' experience
Working with new people, especially of an extra-ordinary calibre gives me so much satisfaction, excitement and i am always open for such projects. One such opportunity was working with Hollywood's famous director, Roland Joffe of the Killing fieldsfame on his new film, Singularity with Josh Hartnett and Bipasha Basu.

Whether its in my humid lake-side dance studio in Kerala or dry heat of Orchcha in Madhya Pradesh, choreographing to new concepts is immensely rewarding...and Singularity was no exception. Thanks to the great team. Definitely have more friends to keep in touch with!

Actor Vijay Thombre finds himself rubbing shoulders with Hollywood heavyweights in Oscar-nominee Roland Joffe’s Singularity

No one can term Vijay Thombre as being low on life experiences. He started his career as a journalist, then shifted to managing a science and technology firm, all the while acting in serials. His latest feather in the cap is a role in director Roland Joffe’s next film Singularity, an epic romance set against a backdrop of the Anglo-Maratha war of the 1780s. The film is named after a principle of quantum physics.

“Ajay Jhankar, the writer of Singularity, is a friend and he suggested that I audition for the role of Havaldar Desai. After giving me a character brief, the director asked me to answer as the character would have as he interviewed me,” says Thombre.

Joffe, nominated for Oscars for films such as The Killing Fields and The Mission, liked Thombre’s mock performance, and the latter soon found himself rubbing shoulders with Hollywood heartthrob Josh Hartnett among others. The Indian actors in the film are Abhay Deol, Bipasha Basu and Atul Kulkarni. “The crew comprises Oscar winners and nominees right from the make-up director to the videographer to the director himself. When working in such a demanding environment where so much attention is given to the minutest detail and planning, you automatically put in your best effort,” says Thombre, well-known for his performance in a political TV drama called Daulat, and serials such as Bhoomiputra and Made in China.

In the film, Thombre’s character finds an ally in Captain James Stewart, played by Hartnett. The friendship soon extended to the actors on the set. “When my niece asked me how I was handling being with Josh Hartnett, I did not know how to answer. I told Josh of the incident and he told me that he himself didn’t know how to handle being Josh Hartnett,” he says with a laugh.

  The sets of Singularity was a melting pot, with the cast and crew drawn from India, New Zealand, Australia, America, the UK and other parts of the world. “Everybody was keen to know more about Indian philosophy, society and culture,” recalls Thombre.

Even as the film gets ready for release in 2012, the actor has already found another pastime — studying supercomputing and figuring out how it can be implemented in India.

“Yes, I have wrapped up work on Singularity,” says Bipasha with a smile. “And now, the film is in Roland’s hands. I think he is busy with the post-production. Honestly, I’m proud to have done the movie at a time when global filmmakers are finding India exciting.”
The actor plays Tulaja Naik, a Maratha warrior, in the film that’s set against the backdrop of the first Anglo-Maratha war in 18th century colonial India. The story revolves around the romance between Tulaja and British soldier James Stewart, played by Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor, 2001, Sin City, 2005).

Bipasha“As an actor, it was a very challenging film,” she says. “Working with Roland has been a novel experience.” And although Singularity is over, “life continues to be hectic” for Bipasha, who says with a smile, “But I am not complaining. That’s the way I love it.”

Headed to Cannes
Singularity, directed by Joffe — best known for The Killing Fields (1984) and City of Joy (1992) — has been majorly shot in the Orchha district of Madhya Pradesh, and Australia. Bipasha also informs that the film, also featuring Abhay Deol, will be
showcased at the Cannes Film Festival next year.
