Juan Antonio Bayona to Direct Showtime's 'Penny Dreadful'

Film and television veteran Timothy Dalton, best known for playing 007 on the big screen, has joined the cast of the upcoming horror drama series, the pay cabler announced Friday. The casting marks the melding of the Bond worlds, with the ex-Bond teaming with Skyfall writer John Logan and director Sam Mendes.

Dalton, who joins Eva Green and Josh Hartnett, will play Sir Malcolm, a hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest.
Penny Dreadful was created by three-time Oscar nominee Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator), who is on board to write and executive produce alongside Academy Award winner Mendes and Neal Street's Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road). Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) is directing the first two episodes.

The psychosexual horror series will begin production in October in London. The series is set to debut in spring 2014.

Dalton, who portrayed James Bond in The Living Daylights and License to Kill, is repped by ICM Partners and U.K.'s Independent Talent Group. On the small screen, he has appeared in many British miniseries, including Jane Eyre, Scarlett, Centennial and Mistral's Daughter, and has guest-starred on Chuck.

The series will be shot on location in Dublin after production was moved from the UK.

Piper will next appear on screen in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special. She will reprise the role of Rose Tyler alongside David Tennant, Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and John Hurt.

"Penny Dreadful" is created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, The Aviator, Gladiator) and executive produced by Logan's Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road), both of Neal Street. Of the eight episodes, the first two will be directed by Juan Antonio Bayona, who helmed The Orphanage and the acclaimed film The Impossible, starring Naomi Watts in her Oscar-nominated performance.

Et vous ?" : le (très court) premier teaser de Penny Dreadful est peut-être avare en images, mais il a le mérite de donner le ton de la série produite par Sam Mendes et crée par John Logan, scénariste de Skyfall. Et il faut donc croire que l'ennemi qui massacre la population, traqué par Eva Green et Josh Hartnett dans l'Angleterre victorienne, n'aura rien d'ordinaire. Débuts de preuves en 2014 sur Showtime, avec une série qui semble bien partie pour concurrencer American Horror Story en terme... d'horreur justement.
