Jonathan, 54, a former St Edward’s Primary and King’s School student, left Macclesfield in the 1980s to pursue his dream of working in the film industry.
His talent has seen him work on hit films including Empire of the Sun, Total Recall, Alien III, Mission Impossible, Love Actually and Prince of Persia.
His latest project, Penny Dreadful, is a horror drama set in Victorian London which has just been given the green light for a second series.

Jonathan is the production designer on the series, which means he has a key creative role and is in charge of the overall look of the film. Working directly with the director and producer, his role is to select the settings and style to visually tell the story.
Despite Jonathan’s long and successful career in film, Nat’s recent visit was the first time he had seen his son in action. He took the trip with his daughter and Jonathan’s sister, Jane Spicer, 62, and her husband Mike.
Nat, of Queens Avenue, Macclesfield, said: “I have always followed Jonathan’s career with great interest and pride, but this was the first time I’ve been able to get to the set where he works. It was one of the last days of filming and while we were looking around, Timothy Dalton came over and introduced himself to me. It was quite a moment. He told me how brilliant working with Jonathan was, which was lovely to hear.”
Nat is originally from Ireland and moved to Macclesfield in the 1940s. He was Macclesfield Town goalkeeper for three season during which he won the Cheshire League Challenge Cup and the Cheshire League Senior Cup.
After his short career he started working for the gas board and clocked up 33 years before retiring.
Nat said Jonathan was always a talented artist and interested in film.
“Ever since he was a little boy it was his dream to work on films. He got his artistic skills from his mum, Elizabeth, who died last year.
“After studying he was designing high spec kitchens but knew he had to take a gamble to follow his dream.
“One day he borrowed my car and with just a few pounds in his pocket drove to London.
“He showed up at the offices of Norman Reynolds, the production designer known for his work on the original Star Wars trilogy. He said Jonathan’s work was the best he’d seen from a student and gave him a job.
“He started as an errands boy and got his first role on Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun.
“In fact, he was asked if he knew anywhere in the north of England where there were any houses of different types and he suggested Legh Road in Knutsford, which was used in the film.”
Since then Jonathan’s career has been on the up and he has worked with Tom Hanks on the Band of Brothers series and Michael Douglas.
During one of his global adventures Jonathan was filming in Alicante and met his wife, who was working in the hotel he was staying in. The couple live there with children Sabrina and Lucia.
