Penny Dreadful будет жить как серия комиксов.
Many fans of Victorian fiction and classic Gothic monsters were heartbroken when it turned out that last year’s third season of the drama Penny Dreadful on Showtime would turn out to be its last. Although the finale episode gave definitive conclusions to some of the characters, there were many, many plot threads that could have continued forward if the show’s creator John Logan had decided to keep going with the show.
While we won’t be getting a fourth season of the series anytime soon it seems, the folks at Titan Comics are continuing the story in a new comic book series from the creative team of the show’s co-executive producer Chris King as writer, with interior art from Jesús Hervás (Sons of Anarchy). Set six months after the series finale, the new comic book series is called Penny Dreadful: The Awaking
In this new comic book continuation, we find Josh Hartnett‘s character of Ethan Chandler unable to move on from the painful events of the show’s final episode. As he searches desperately for meaning in a world without his beloved Vanessa Ives, ancient words echo across the centuries, and he is called on once again to take up arms against the creatures crawling out of the night.
Titan Comics’ Penny Dreadful #1: The Awaking comes with six fantastic covers to collect from artists including; Stephen Mooney (Half Past Danger), Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven), Shane Pierce (Judge Dredd, Vikings), Louie De Martinis (Penny Dreadful prequel mini-series) and also two incredible connecting photo variant covers. Penny Dreadful #1: The Awaking hits comic stores and digital platforms on April 5, 2017. You can see all the cover images in our gallery below.

Take a Peek Inside the Penny Dreadful Sequel Comic – The Awaking
Posted on January 23, 2017 by Debi Moore
Earlier this year we gave you a look at the six covers for Titan Comics’ upcoming four-issue “sequel” to the Showtime series “Penny Dreadful,” and now we’re back with a peek inside Issue 1 of Penny Dreadful: The Awaking.
About Penny Dreadful: The Awaking:
Written by “Penny Dreadful” TV series co-executive producer Chris King, with interior art from Jesús Hervás (Sons of Anarchy) and colors by Jason Wordie, this new comic sees Ethan Chandler (portrayed by Josh Hartnett in the series) unable to move on. As he searches desperately for meaning in a world without Vanessa, ancient words echo across the centuries, and he is called on once again to take up arms against the creatures crawling out of the night.
The BAFTA Award-winning “Penny Dreadful” TV show — created, written, and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator, Skyfall, Spectre) — features classic characters from Victorian Gothic literature and a host of brand-new characters, including Vanessa Ives, Sir Malcolm Murray, Frankenstein’s Monster, Sembene, and Mina Harker.
Titan Comics’ Penny Dreadful #1: The Awaking comes with six fantastic covers to collect from artists including Stephen Mooney (Half Past Danger), Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven), Shane Pierce (Judge Dredd, Vikings), and Louie De Martinis (Penny Dreadful prequel mini-series) and also two incredible connecting photo variant covers.

«Страшные сказки» вернутся в виде комикса
Готический сериал «Страшные сказки», закрытый в июне этого года, продолжается в новой серии одноимённых комиксов от издательства Titan Books, сообщает Den of Geek. Сценаристом выступит один из исполнительных продюсеров Крис Кинг вместе с художником Хесусом Хервасом (Jesús Hervás)
Titan Books — британское издательство комиксов, основанное в 1981 году. В настоящее время оно специализируется на комиксах по знаменитым франшизам, включая видеоигры и сериалы.

Today in TV History: ‘Penny Dreadful’ Gave Many Josh Hartnett Fans the Moment They’ve Been Waiting For
Of all the great things about television, the greatest is that it’s on every single day. TV history is being made, day in and day out, in ways big and small. In an effort to better appreciate this history, we’re taking a look back, every day, at one particular TV milestone.
PROGRAM ORIGINALLY AIRED ON THIS DATE: Penny Dreadful, “Demimonde” (Season 1, Episode 4) [Stream on Netflix]
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Penny Dreadful was one of those shows where it was a miracle we ever had it on TV in the first place. A wildly inventive mishmash of Victorian-era horror characters — we’ve got a wolfman, a few vampire hunters, a witch, Dr. Frankenstein and his monster(s) — all situated in filthy, sexy London town. In the first season, as we were still figuring our characters out, we got one particularly eye-opening moment that was never really touched upon (uh, so to speak) again. Which is a real shame.
To set the stage, Ethan Chandler is a werewolf, though at this point in the story the audience doesn’t know that yet. He’s mostly just helping Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) in their investigation into the evil that claimed his daughter and hunts Vanessa. Due to his wolfy secret, Chandler is a mysterious sort. He spends much of the first three episodes in disbelief at this world of monsters and mayhem. He’s also semi-romancing terminally ill prostitute Brona. But the character was a bit at odds and ends.
Enter Dorian Gray, played with infuriatingly lithe arrogance by Reeve Carney. Gray’s deal is that he’s immortal but for the aging portrait in his attic. On Penny Dreadful, he’s not quite the villain he’s made to be in the book, but his decadent amorality keeps him on the sidelines for some of the more straightforward crusades. He’s also wildly sexual, in basically all directions, throwing a captivating eye at Vanessa every now and then.
But the scene with him and Ethan Chandler in episode 4 — coming at the tail end of the episode — comes out of nowhere. It is a purely instinctive and sensual scene, where Chandler’s uncertainty and Gray’s curiosity lead them both into a most unexpected (but wildly hot) sex scene.

Penny Dreadful #2.6 Review: Hemorrhaging Dialogue And Cliches Abound
Lily and Ethan prepare to deal with the forces of Hell itself, and, to do so, they must find Dracula and make use of an ancient weapon which he alone possesses.
Meanwhile, Lucifer, possessing the body of Vanessa Ives, prepares to begin his quest for dominance by calling upon every vile instinct which humanity possesses. He also calls upon an old pact with Dorian Gray.
Sedna and Kaetenay are assaulted aboard a boat in the chaos.
Frankenstein and Jekyll prepare to resurrect Sir Malcolm, but Catriona is in touch with Malcolm’s spirit and knows a better way to seek his aid.
The show Penny Dreadful was fun but flawed. Using the Victorian/Gothic era horror to paint something of a shared universe (not too unlike League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) is a fun idea. Timothy Dalton and Eva Green are great actors, and Josh Hartnett arguably put in the best performance of his career on the show.
Continuing that show to put together a Biblical apocalypse wherein Miss Ives turns out to be the Lilith of the Apocrypha seems like a logical extension of the series.
Unfortunately, the dialogue in this story is pretty bad and impossible to ignore. It uses clichés as much as it uses reference to Gothic horror.
Penny Dreadful #2.6 implies that Lucifer is trying to start World War I, which has become a bizarre fixture of stories taking place in the late 19th Century (see also Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows).
They make Dracula a part of Lucifer’s fall from grace. I get it; everyone likes to tack on their pre-Stoker origin story for Dracula. There’s been everything from Vlad the Impaler to Judas Iscariot, but this one feels like it’s trying a bit too hard.
Dorian Gray feels a bit out of character too. He is too submissive and is unhappy with his current existence, both of which feel very unlike him.
The art is pretty solid, with its washed-out and shadow-heavy style. It looks quite good, and the color work is appropriately grim. Jesus Hervas and Jason Wordie put in some admirable work in this comic.
Unfortunately, the clichés, the weak recreations of the characters, and the abysmal dialogue make Penny Dreadful #6 a pretty dire book. This one does not earn a recommendation. Give it a pass.
