James McAvoy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington & More Set for Danny Boyle's THE CHILDREN'S MONOLOGUES

Fifteen children growing up in a poor and remote part of rural South Africa have inspired Academy Award winner Danny Boyle to bring their stories to life in London as part of a hard hitting special theatre production starring James McAvoy, Academy Award Nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington, Josh Hartnett, Christopher Eccleston, Zawe Ashton and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

The Children's Monologues dramatise the testimonies of young children growing up in Rammulotsi, a small rural township in the Free State province of South Africa. Invited to write about a day they will never forget, the Children's Monologues retell the stories of young people expressing personal experiences in their own words, in their native Sesotho language. While some monologues capture moments of childish joy and wonder, many stories tell of desperate circumstances: what it is like to watch their parents die because of inadequate medical treatment, discover their mother has been gang raped and burned alive, and succumb to xenophobia they once despised.

Together they provide a deeply intimate and uncompromising insight into the lives of children facing extremely difficult realities.

As the children attempt to make sense of the stories they tell, the plays raise troubling and resonant questions: how can one find meaning after the murder of a loved one? Are some lives just not worth living? What's the difference between a mental illness and a spiritual encounter?

This moving sequence of monologues in aid of Boyle's arts charity Dramatic Need has been adapted for the stage by a who's who of writers - including Sir David Hare, Neil LaBute, James Graham, Laura Wade, Jack Thorne, Roy Williams OBE and Tanika Gupta MBE - working from first-hand accounts of children supported by the charity.

The Children's Monologues will be performed at the Royal Court Theatre on Sunday 25 October . It is expected to be one of the most dramatically powerful theatre experiences of 2015 - with Boyle fusing live theatre, hip hop music, classical piano from James Rhodes and documentary footage to create an immersive mashup that transports audiences to Rammulotsi in a dramatic one-night-only performance.

The 2015 Children's Monologues follow a production that played to a sold-out audience at the Old Vic five years ago in November, with Boyle - a founding trustee of Dramatic Need - directing a cast that included Sir Ben Kingsley, Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rose Byrne, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Gemma Arterton.

Amber Sainsbury, founder of Dramatic Need, said:

"To share our lives, our fears and sorrows and loves, is a universal human impulse. Dramatic Need works through the creative arts to help vulnerable children in rural Southern Africa to tell their stories: to their families, communities and to each other. This creates room for accountability, acceptance and hopefully resolution of the issues these kids are facing on a daily basis. The Children's Monologues allows them to share these experiences with an international audience, so that we too can bear witness to what these kids have lived through. That some of the world's most celebrated actors, directors and dramatists are once again coming together to create a unique piece of work, is a testament to both the power of the arts to reach across cultures, and to the strength of these individual children's stories."

Kit Harington said:

"I'm honoured to have been asked to be part of 'The Children's Monologues'. To get to work with some of the country's most exciting writers and actors, whose work I have long admired, and with the brilliant Danny Boyle, is an amazing opportunity. To be able to tell the stories of impoverished Children from the other side of the world, which they themselves have penned, is a unique and important experience that I couldn't possibly turn down. Dramatic Need is an incredibly special cause and will produce a night of charity and theatre which should be daring, moving and an experience not to forget."

Proceeds from this year's event will fund the build of a new, movable arts centre for the township communities in which Dramatic Need works. The charity, which sends volunteer arts professionals to Rwanda and South Africa, gives children the chance to change their lives through dance, drama, art, music, film and photography. Through the arts the charity helps children to deal with trauma and conflict while also helping them to confront community-held 'taboo' subjects such as HIV awareness, ethnic violence and gender inequality.

The performance will take place on Sunday 25th October. Tickets can be purchased from Monday 14th September via wwwdramaticneed.org/ or http://www.royalcourttheatre.com/whats- … monologues and are priced between £180 and £450, with a limited number of VIP packages price on application.

What To Book: Danny Boyle’s Children’s Monologues

Star-studded show will bring to life the heart-breaking stories of 15 South African children

By Rebecca Cope 16 September 2015

Danny Boyle is teaming up with James McAvoy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington, Josh Hartnett and Gugu Mbatha-Raw to bring to life the heartbreaking stories of 15 South African children.

The Children’s Monologues dramatises the testimonies of young children from the rural township of Rammulotsi in Free State, who were each invited to write about a day they will never forget. While some monologues focus on happy memories, many tell stories of desperate circumstances; from the child who watched their parents die due to inadequate medical treatment, to another whose mother was gang raped and burned alive.

The one-off performance will take place on Sunday 25th October at the Royal Court Theatre, and will fuse hip hop music, classical piano and documentary footage with live theatre. Proceeds from the event will go to Dramatic Need, a charity that gives children in Rwanda and South Africa the chance to change their lives through the arts. Money raised will help build a new moveable arts centre, where children will be encouraged to deal with trauma and confront taboo subjects, such as HIV awareness, ethnic violence and gender inequality.

Boyle - who is a founding trustee of Dramatic Needs - previously put on a sold-out show for the charity in 2010, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston.

“I’m honoured to have been asked to be part of The Children's Monologues,” said Kit Harington. “To get to work with some of the country's most exciting writers and actors, whose work I have long admired, and with the brilliant Danny Boyle, is an amazing opportunity. To be able to tell the stories of impoverished Children from the other side of the world, which they themselves have penned, is a unique and important experience that I couldn't possibly turn down.

Break a leg, guys!

Stars To Perform In One-off Charity Show

Stars Including Nicole Kidman, James Mcavoy And Benedict Cumberbatch Have Signed Up To Perform Monologues About Life In An African Township For A Charity Fundraiser.
The actors, along with Josh Hartnett, Kit Harington, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, are set to take part in The Children's Monologues show, which comprises of solo pieces based on first-hand accounts from young children growing up in the rural township of Rammulotsi in South Africa.

The production is directed by Slumdog Millionaire moviemaker Danny Boyle, who launched the project to raise awareness and boost donations for Dramatic Need, a charity which provides arts education to vulnerable children in South Africa and Rwanda.

"The stories are shocking," Danny tells Britain's The Guardian newspaper. "You don't always want to know these things are going on in the world, especially to children, but when those actors get up on stage in London it will mean that another thousand people hear those stories, and that those kids really have a hell of a voice."

"I think it's a really effective project, letting actors who people really respond to give a voice to these children who we would otherwise never hear," Josh adds.

"There's something about the way children see the world that can lead to some of the funniest, most provocative and evocative work because it is unencumbered by years of cynicism."

The show, which also features live music from FKA Twigs, is due to take place at the Royal Court Theatre in London on 25 October (15).

Danny first put on a different version of the show in 2000 with Benedict, Tom Hiddleston and Eddie Redmayne.

Hollywood actors to perform children's monologues in new Danny Boyle play
http://s3.uploads.ru/t/Fvsu4.jpg

Cast featuring Nicole Kidman, Benedict Cumberbatch and Josh Hartnett will act out real life testimonies of children growing up in rural South Africa

Actors including Nicole Kidman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor and James McAvoy will perform monologues drawn from first-hand accounts of children growing up in the rural township of Rammulotsi, South Africa, in a one-off production directed by Danny Boyle.

“The rawness of the original stories in the Children’s Monologues punches you in the stomach,” said Boyle. “They have that directness that you find with children anywhere. Kids can’t compartmentalise or filter traumatic stuff so they just say it. With that directness comes this terrible heart-wrenching intimacy.”

The children’s testimonies, adapted for the stage by playwrights including David Hare, Laura Wade, Neil LaBute, James Graham and Jack Thorne, share experiences that range from moments of childish discovery to accounts of sexual abuse and the suffering caused by Aids.

Boyle said the monologues were a vital way of ensuring the often-silenced voices of these children could be heard loudly, first on the London stage but also across the country, as the Children’s Monologues is then shared with community theatre groups and libraries across the UK.

The play, which boasts an impressive cast also including Kit Harington, Josh Hartnett, David Thewlis and Christopher Eccleston, was conceived by Oscar-winning director Boyle as a way to raise awareness and funds for his charity, Dramatic Need, which helps children in Africa through using art to help them cope with trauma and also as a tool to educate.

“The stories are shocking,” Boyle said. “You don’t always want to know these things are going on in the world, especially to children, but when those actors get up on stage in London it will mean that another thousand people hear those stories, and that those kids really have a hell of a voice.”

Boyle said that live music from FKA Twigs, rapper Little Simz and classical piano from James Rhodes would be fused alongside the stories.

Actor Josh Hartnett got involved with the charity after working with its founder, former actor Amber Sainsbury, on the film 30 Days of Night. He will be performing a piece adapted by Tanika Gupta, which is a compilation of three different testimonies which deal with the children’s relationship with their mothers.

“It’s a very moving piece,” said Hartnett. “It’s about a young person talking about their mother being a hero to them – all the lessons she taught them as a child and all the lessons they are trying to hold on to as they grow up – but it turns out at the end that their mother has died of Aids.

“But for me, when I read the monologue, it immediately brought me back to thinking about my relationship with my own mother and the way that I saw things when I was younger.”

Hartnett made his stage debut in London in 2008 in a production of Rain Man, but admitted monologues were new territory for him as an actor.

“I think it’s a really effective project; letting actors who people really respond to give a voice to these children whom we would otherwise never hear. There’s something about the way children see the world that can lead to some of the funniest, most provocative and evocative work because it is unencumbered by years of cynicism.”

Playwright Laura Wade, the writer of Posh, adapted the testimony of a young girl called Goodness, who spoke about being raped by one of her family members. Wade said she had been drawn to the piece not only by the power of her story but also by the “universality” of it; how she had protected other adults in her life from finding out what had happened to her.

“ I thought that was a really interesting, a really sad and a really affecting idea about the way children do find themselves protecting the adults from the reality of their lives,” she said. “For me it was about seeing a dramatic potential there really.”

Wade’s piece will see her reunited with Kit Harington, who appeared in the first cast of Posh, and will be the actor performing Goodness’s monologue.

“You work very hard with this sort of project not to be patronising and to allow the children’s vices to be heard,” explained Wade. “They are such universal stories, so it’s about getting to the heart of the story really and telling it in the right spirit.

“Part of the brief is translating the piece into something which has slightly more metaphor to it, and something that theatre does really well is find the meaning and humanity underlying the facts [and turn it] into something which can become universal and meaningful and therefore relatable.”

The Children’s Monologues will be performed at the Royal Court Theatre on Sunday 25 October. Tickets are available here.

http://s2.uploads.ru/t/s7ChI.jpg

http://s2.uploads.ru/t/rmgdk.png

Stars set for charity monologue show
20/10/2015
http://s7.uploads.ru/t/ORYTr.jpg

A host of stars are to take part in a charity show this weekend, performing monologues dramatising the true stories of children growing up in South Africa.

Nicole Kidman, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy and Josh Hartnett are among the cast of The Children's Monologues, directed by Danny Boyle.

Proceeds from the performance will go towards building a new arts centre in the Rammulotsi township.

The one-off show will be at the Royal Court in London on Sunday.

It will also be performed simultaneously in South Africa by the children whose personal experiences are revealed on stage, in their native Sesotho language.

Other stars taking part in London include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, David Thewlis and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Playwrights from both South Africa and the UK - including David Hare and Laura Wade - have dramatised the true stories, which tackle issues such as HIV, gang rape, murder, the loss of a parent and xenophobia.

Amber Sainsbury, founder of the charity Dramatic Need, which has organised the monologues, began the project in 2010 as a way of giving a voice to children who may not otherwise be heard.

"One of the biggest battles we have is trying to get people to understand why in a continent with great needs you need the arts," she says.

"Surely food, water and medicine is more important, and in some parts it is - but in recovery and reconciliation, anything that humanises, particularly children, is actually in some cases as important.

"It's about testimony, standing witness to your stories and asking children to talk about what's happened to them in a way that's non-invasive.

"It's difficult for a nine-year-old child to say 'I was raped and I am HIV-positive' in front of her community, but it is easier for her to get up and say 'my name is such and such a character and this is what happened to me'.

"The community is then forced to recognise what happened, but they can't direct anger or stigma at the particular child and that's why theatre is a powerful tool in these communities."

However Sainsbury stresses the monologues are not all "doom and gloom".

"There's some very traumatic disturbing stuff that you never want a child to experience, but there's also some upbeat moments as well of childish joy and playfulness."

It is the second Children's Monologues production, the first was held in 2010 and was also directed by Boyle. That show featured the likes of Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne.

This time around, 17 actors, 13 writers, 17 artists, 10 musicians and three directors will come together for the first time on the morning of 25 October and have eight hours to rehearse before putting the show on.

"It's a logistical nightmare and a huge challenge, but there is a real immediacy to it and it's raw theatre," Sainsbury says.

"It's very hands on deck and I think that appeals to the actors to return to what attracted them to the vocation in the first place."

'I felt devastated'

Josh Hartnett has been involved with Dramatic Need for a number of years, but is the first time he has been available in London to take part in the monologue project.

"I'm sure Danny [Boyle] has an interesting approach to bring these monologues to life - it won't be as simple as getting on stage," he says.

"I'm reading a monologue of a little girl reading from her diary and telling her story about her mother, the relationship they had and the lessons her mother taught her. But you find out at the end her mother died of Aids, so she's writing in memoriam.

"At the beginning it seems like you're just hearing a little girl's adulation for her mother, but as it starts to come to light her mother is not there any more it takes a greater weight and by the end I felt devastated for her.

"I don't have the greatest relationship with my own mother, so it took me for a loop as it gave me a longing for that connection and made me evaluate that relationship."

Although The Children's Monologues is only on for one night, Sainsbury says the legacy of the project will continue.

"The actors are so busy we could never get them to donate a week of their time, but the plan is to take the scripts and roll them out across schools and libraries across the country so they can be used as a learning tool," she says.

"But the ultimate goal is making children empowered by the fact their stories matter and have value.

"It's important that we remain empathetic and don't forget that most children don't experience childhood in the way we would want them to - and I hope that resonates with the audience."

The Children's Monologues runs at the Royal Court on 25 October.

A-Listers Take To Stage For Africa Charity
http://s6.uploads.ru/t/B3yhc.jpg

The stars are raising money for an African arts charity that helps children use drama to cope with real-life trauma.
Danny Boyle is set to direct a host of celebrities for a one-off performance in aid of his African arts charity.

The Oscar-winning director is taking the helm of the Children's Monologues at the Royal Court in London with Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy and Nicole Kidman all appearing on stage.

They are raising money for Dramatic Need, a charity that works with vulnerable children in Rwanda and South Africa, and which uses the arts to address their needs.

For the Children's Monologues, 15 children from a poor township in South Africa were asked to recount their most memorable day.

The stories were then dramatised and will be performed on Sunday night.

Amber Sainsbury, who set up the charity, told Sky News the arts can play a valuable role in rehabilitating children who've had traumatic experiences.

"These children are carrying burdens that no child or adult should ever have to carry and it's very important that they find a way that they can adequately express these burdens or these issues," she said.

"So what Dramatic Need does is teach issue-based workshops that encourage children to talk about what they're going through and then express it in a way that others can understand what they're going through."

James McAvoy said he was persuaded to take part in the project because he was so moved by one of the stories.

"When you read the testimonies, that affects you and you feel a huge responsibility," he said.

"It was the one personal connection I had in reading that personal testimony and I think that's the thing that's really important about drama as therapy, not about drama as entertainment."

Mongi Mthombeni is an emerging South African playwright who dramatised the children's testimonies along with Sir David Hare, Neil LaBute, Laura Wade and Roy Williams.

"There are some very harrowing stories in South Africa," he said.

"South Africa does have a lot of people, it has a lot of trauma to get through, to deal with.

"The myths we tell ourselves, that's what drives people's lives and gives kids the power to create their own - it's the most powerful thing you can do."

James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch and Nicole Kidman star in charity show to help African children
An all-star cast, including Nicole Kidman and Josh Hartnett, have been brought together by director Danny Boyle to give a unique charity performance.

James McAvoy, Cressida Bonas and Benedict Cumberbatch are among the A-list names who will be starring in the Children’s Monologues at London’s Royal Court Theatre this evening.

Each actor will perform first-hand accounts from children growing up in the remote South African town of Rammulotsi to raise money for Dramatic Need, an arts charity helping vulnerable children in Africa.

They often focus on horrific events including murder and gang rape.

X-Men and Trainspotting star James described the production as “dark and sad” and added: “All the pieces are about bad things happening….it’s Dramatic Need, not Dramatic Sunday Club. There is a need for it.”

“It’s all sad stuff but there are some funny bits along the way. It’s problems such as misogny – bad treatment of women by men, girls by boys,” he said.

“I’m playing a wee girl who’s telling the story of her brother who saved up for months and months to buy a pair of trainers that were the jiviest, coolest trainers you’ve ever seen in your life.

“It gave the whole family a lift when he actually managed to buy them – and he got mugged and killed for them.”

He said: “Getting the chance to work with Danny, who I’ve worked with before, he’s fully in control and in charge even though it’s going to be a whirlwind and all over the place, he’s the guy you want in charge of something like that.”

Alfie Allen, who stars in Game Of Thrones as Theon Greyjoy, described it as “an incredible opportunity”.

“I’ve never been on stage at the Royal Court before,” he said. “Just to be on the stage here, it’s such an amazing theatre and around a fantastic cause.

Alfie said he was so excited about his performance tonight that he left his keys in his flat.

“I got on the Tube this morning because I didn’t realise I was getting picked up,” he continued.

“As soon as I got the call I was so excited for it.

“The things which happen in South Africa are awful.

“My piece was adapted from the original testimony by Neil LaBute.

“It’s a dark piece about initiation into a gang and it’s a gang-rape scene.

“There are things that happen like that on these shores, ritualistic beatings of women to get initiated into gangs, so it’s not as far from home as you think it is.”

Alfie said he has spent two-and-a-half weeks learning the script “like a maniac” and added: “It’s that classic thing of being so, so excited and then getting here and being terrified.”

Josh Hartnett, who plays Ethan Chandler in the TV series Penny Dreadful, has a long-standing involvement with the charity.

“I’m working nearby in Dublin and was able to come by and be part of it and so I’m happy to help out in any way,” he said.

“My story is about a 13-year-old girl who lost her mother who died of Aids.”
